Topic 1 DQ 1 (Obj. 1.2) Practical Dilemmas (Substantive Responses to the “Question” Will Count for Participation Points!) What are some distinctions between physical and psychological implications on addiction? Include at least two distinctions in your response. Physical implications of addiction is what happens in the body. Tolerance can get built up (Levinthal, 2023), which then leads to dependence. If the drug or substance is discontinued, the patient may experience physical symptoms such as withdrawal or other dysregulating symptoms where the body requires more of the substance to "feel better". Some substances such as benzos and opiates are more capable of creating physical dependence more quickly (CWC, n.d.). Psychological implications are when the mind is affected. Substance use can create changes in the brain which make it more difficult to use sound judgment when substances are used (Levinthal, 2023). Riskier behaviors are then engaged in such as repeatedly driving under the influence, or using at work. One might even stop caring about things that are important in exchange for the opportunity to use. It can be debilitating for those that want to stop using when there is psychological addiction as well. Comprehensive Wellness Centers. (n.d.).
