2 Adolescence and Culture Adolescence is a critical development period shaped by cultural norms, values, and beliefs ( Blakemore, 2019) . Where an individual grows up can impact their lived experiences and shape their identity. In addition, throughout this period, individuals go through physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes that affect how they feel about themselves and interact with others. These changes occur in a cultural setting, which may impact how teenagers see themselves and the world. The video "What's it like being 17 around the world?" provides a window into the diverse experiences of adolescents from different cultural backgrounds, highlighting the importance of cultural factors in shaping adolescents' lives (BBC Newsbeat, 2019). By understanding the cultural context in which adolescents grow up, we can better support their development and promote their well-being. Zaina, a Muslim adolescent from Saudi Arabia who is 17 years old, is one of the youths mentioned in the video (BBC Newsbeat, 2019). She is from a traditional household where gender segregation, modesty, and religious beliefs are valued highly. In her discussion of the difficulties of living in a patriarchal culture, Zaina points out how women's rights are constrained and how rigid gender standards may be oppressive (BBC Newsbeat, 2019). She also discusses her desire to become a doctor and the significance of her family, faith, and objectives in life. Furthermore, comparing my experience during adolescence to Zaina's, there are some similarities and differences. Like Zaina, I grew up in a religious family emphasizing specific values and beliefs. However, my cultural background was more liberal, and I had more freedom to express myself and pursue my interests. I did not face the same level of gender segregation or oppression that Zaina did, and I had more opportunities to explore my identity and choose my future.
3 In conclusion, the cultural context in which adolescents grow up can significantly impact their development and lived experiences. By exploring the diverse experiences of adolescents from different cultures, we can better understand the complex interactions between culture and adolescence.
