What is client-centered therapy? How does this approach apply to your interactions with others? Think of a time you used unconditional positive regard. What was the reaction? What do you think of that approach? Client-centered therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the client's needs and feelings, rather than on the therapist's interpretation of those needs and feelings (Feist et al., 2021). Appropriate communication channels aided by correct word choice, tonal variation, and other non-verbal cues make the flow of information between a counselor and a client more efficient. Allowing the client to take charge of the counseling platform by actively listening to them, emphasizing key points as addressed by the clients, and showing empathy and unconditional positive regard makes the client feel comfortable when addressing their problems (Feist et al., 2021). Additionally, being compassionate, thoughtful, and respectful makes the counseling atmosphere more conducive for the client. CCT allows the client to achieve their full potential in therapy and gain independence skills and self-responsibility (Feist et al., 2021). In normal life interactions, allowing others to express themselves freely without interrupting or reprimanding them builds good rapport hence cementing better connections that bolsters our interpersonal relationships in the long run. An unconditional positive regard is a good approach that can be used not only in counseling platforms but also in general life settings involving interpersonal interactions. This is because, the approach involves accepting and valuing another person without regard to their thoughts, feeling, or behaviors as stipulated by Feist et al. (2021). I used unconditional positive regard to help my sister keep a steady emotional state during a difficult time when she lost her job during the Covid-19 pandemic. I realized, in the process, that her level of anxiety and depression reduced because I positively embraced her viewpoints and offered possible solutions.
Unconditional positive regard restores hope by showing us we are loved and accepted (Feist et al., 2021). References Feist, J., Roberts T., & Feist G. (2021). Theories of personality, (10th ed.). McGraw-Hill Education.
