PSYCH UA 30 / Fall 2023 Guidelines for writing a good literature critique: The goal of the critique paper is to encourage you to read original research articles focusing on the methods used to investigate the question under consideration. You are required to review two empirical articles related to personality in terms of their approach and theoretical perspective. This literature critique should be 3-pages (double-spaced) and will count for 12% of the final grade. 10% will be deducted every 24 hours for late submissions. You are highly encouraged to discuss your topic with the TAs in the weeks before the due date. First: Understand the difference: Empirical articles investigate a single topic with specific participants and have intro-method- results-discussion sections. On the other hand, literature review, meta-analysis, and systematic review articles evaluate empirical articles to draw a point. 1. How do I decide on a topic? Start by identifying areas of interest within the field of personality research. Consider questions or issues that pique your curiosity or relate to your course content. Consult with your instructor or TAs for topic suggestions or to refine your ideas. 2. How do I find articles relating to my topic? Utilize academic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, or your university's library resources. PUBMED: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi Google Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com Use specific keywords related to your topic for efficient searches. Pay attention to the publication dates and focus on recent research for up-to-date information. Explore reference lists in articles you find to discover additional relevant sources. 3. How do I write my literature critique? Start with a clear introduction that provides context for your review.
PSYCH UA 30 / Fall 2023 Summarize the two selected empirical research articles separately, highlighting their key methods and theoretical perspectives. Analyze and compare the approaches and theoretical perspectives used in each article. Discuss any similarities, differences, or notable findings. Conclude with a synthesis of your analysis, emphasizing the significance of these comparisons. 4. Common structure for the paper: Title Page (Include your name, course details, date, etc.) Introduction (Contextualize the topic and state your purpose) Article 1 Review (Summary, analysis, and comparison of methods and theoretical perspectives) Article 2 Review (Summary, analysis, and comparison of methods and theoretical perspectives) Comparison and Analysis (Discuss similarities, differences, and overall insights) Conclusion (Summarize key findings and their implications) References (List all the articles and sources you've cited) 5. What do I include in my paper? Clear and concise summaries of the two empirical research articles. In-depth analysis of the methods used in each article. Examination of the theoretical perspectives underpinning the research. A thoughtful comparison of the approaches and theoretical frameworks. Critical evaluation of the strengths and limitations of each article. An overarching synthesis of the findings and their implications for the field of personality research. Other Details Double-spaced, no smaller than 11-point font, with 1-inch margins. No more than 3 pages plus 1 page for references. Use APA style referencing/bibliography (https://apastyle.apa.org/) Must be uploaded to Brightspace on time, or you will be penalized Discuss your proposed articles with your TAs during recitations or during office hours to receive their feedback.
PSYCH UA 30 / Fall 2023 Avoiding Plagiarism There are academic search engines that check for plagiarism with published material, such as Turnitin–which will review all submitted assignments. You are not coming up with original ideas anyway, so just cite what you paraphrase from a book or article. You can have as many citations as you want in your references. Paraphrase well and cite your sources, and you'll avoid plagiarism. Do not quote passages from articles or books. Use your own words and cite the source.
