Character Analysis: Russel of “UP” Movie Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Instructor Due Date
Character Analysis: Russel of “UP” Movie Introduction Russel, age 8, a character in the movie “UP” is a thoughtful and self-motivated young man. He has accomplished all of the necessary physical stages for a kid of his generation, even though he has a home environment that is less than ideal because his parents got a divorce and his father moved out. It would indicate that he has not allowed the instability in his family life to impede his intellectual or social-emotional development. The absence of Russel's father is a source of motivation for him as he works toward earning his last merit badge. He is under the impression that when he completes the requirements for this badge, his dad will attend the transition celebration in which he participates and affix the badge to his sash as a jungle explorer. The character of Russel is that of an Asian-American youngster with an individualistic outlook (Bates, 2020). Russel is a highly self-reliant youngster, directing his efforts toward enhancing his own capabilities. Physical Development Russell is developing at this stage normally in a couple of ways as his overall progress indicates that he is fulfilling the criteria for his current developmental stage. He doesn't have any trouble with primary responsibilities for a child his age. But he needs help with things like rope climbing and long-distance walks. Based on the movie, Russell is between the middle and late childhood phases of development (Parsons, 2023). His failure to make the ascent to the home and his claims of exhaustion while walking indicate this, even though his old traveling partner shows no signs of fatigue or trouble with the distance covered. So, Russel's body isn't typically developing. He should engage in yoga as young children have the potential to benefit from
yoga's capacity to enhance their physical development ( Wolff & Stapp, 2019) . Notably, Russel's fecal incontinence and bowel control are typical for a youngster his age. Despite not needing to go to the restroom only five minutes earlier, he tells Carl that he has to go now. In any case, he can pinpoint bodily sensations within a reasonable amount of time. Cognitive development Russsel's mental growth is shown in a straightforward yet ultimately effective manner. The text claims that Russel has entered the concrete operations stage at this point in his cognitive development. At this point, Russel is either well on developing his spatial mapping skills or already possesses them. Russell demonstrates normal maturation when he offers Carl that they walk home to the ideal place. Considering the travel time and distance, Russell's growth is on par with the average person's. As for his executive functioning, specifically his episodic and working memory, Russell is developing typically ( Mason et al., 2021) . He uses a serial memory technique when describing his past ice cream runs with Carl. Even down to the kind of ice cream he received, he remembers the specifics of the outing he took with his father. To illustrate his ability to recall information in the present, Russel recalls the many times he had seen Doug, the dog, get quite sidetracked whenever the subject of squirrels was brought up. Then, he applies what he's learned to stop the canine attacks on airplanes. If I had to, I would characterize his kind of intellect as high natural intelligence (Parsons, 2023). Social Development At this point in his development, Russel ought to be gradually distancing himself from his family bonds and soliciting criticism from his contemporaries, his professors, and an adult who is not a member of his lineage (Parsons, 2023). On the other hand, he displays unusual

growth in that he seems to be quite concerned with what his father thinks of him. It is logical because Russel has made several efforts to maintain communication with his father and is likely feeling abandoned. On the other hand, in terms of his ability to socialize with his contemporaries, his growth is ordinary. The fact that he was a member of the wilderness explorers lends credence to this assertion, according to what is said in the research article that investigates the consequences of participating in activities like boy or girl scouts. Children participate in various activities, each of which exposes them to a particular institutional framework, set of objectives, skills, and connections. As a result, various forms of youth participation lead to distinct developmental outcomes (Christensen et al., 2020). Despite the circumstances of Russel's family life, his involvement in the scouting program has been of considerable help to his overall social development. In addition, Russell exhibits the right level of development in his concept of self. In the next paragraph, we will discuss this topic further. Identity Development A new, more moral Russel is something he is actively striving toward. He is coming to terms with the morality of his actions and how he sees himself. His attempts to shield Kevin, the bird, from harm indicate this. Identity development involves underlying mechanisms of identity development at the intraindividual, microlevel, that is, at the level where development is taking place (Branje, 2022). Despite Carl's requests, Russel tries to defend Kevin since he sees himself as an animal advocate. In addition, Russel is adamant. Resilient children have "executive abilities," such as regulating their emotions, thinking critically and solving problems, and showing compassion for others, as described in the article (Parsons, 2023). Russel demonstrates his independence throughout the film, but especially when he abandons Carl to rescue Kevin. While this was risky and might indicate a high degree of impulsivity, it also shows that Russel is
secure in who he is and can triumph over adversity. Concerns about Russell's impulsivity arise because he risked his life. However, it is also worth noting that people high in impulsivity often react without much foresight or analysis of the possible longer-term ramifications of their acts" (Benheim, 2021). While this is certainly causing alarm, it is also worth noting that it is a natural part of growing up and that self-control improves, albeit slowly, until adulthood. Twentieth-one percent of youngsters lacked adequate abilities in the area of self-regulation. ( Hetherington et al., 2020). However, despite the risks associated with his impulsivity, Russell shows unusual self- control for his age. Implications for Practice As a professional counselor, I would incorporate developmental theory and research in my work by introducing the terminology of derivatives and emphasizing the conceptually distinct problems amenable to investigation in the field of developmental studies. However, I will say that by engaging Explorers in themed events and meetings around a wide range of personality virtues, forming ongoing positive relationships with Scouts and grown-ups in the initiative, and enabling Kids to exercise and apply learned competencies in various ecologically- valid setups. Then, I would make sure that Russel and I had a conversation about his family life and his time spent with Carl. While it seems sensible for a Disney film to conclude on a positive note, Russel's time spent with Carl is likely to have far-reaching effects. Good relationships and communication help in the development of children (Imram et al., 2022). In order to help Russel cope with his missing father and many near-death experiences, I would first establish a good connection with him. T he theory would look like studying Russel's mental, emotional, interpersonal, physical, and cognitive growth throughout the course of his lifetime in the counseling room. Specifically, Erikson's
theory proposes that at regular intervals throughout life, people experience a psychological crisis. Industry vs. inferiority, competence, faithfulness, love, care, and wisdom, in that order) is seen as a natural consequence of encountering the aforementioned challenges. Theories provide insight into the ways in which children grow and acquire knowledge. They are used in the process of predicting future behavior and guiding our instructional strategies. Developmental theories regard development as the progression through time from basic to more sophisticated understandings of oneself and the world around one over time. The essence of progress may be that it is continuous or that it occurs in phases, but the force is almost always moving in the direction of deeper and more complicated understandings. Personal Reflection on Development What I learned about myself and lifespan development through this assignment is my ability to apply what we have been studying in class to real-world situations. I found the ability to go more deeply into what we have been studying and examine it from a more concrete point of view beneficial. As a result of completing this project, it is incredibly advantageous to my development as a potential practitioner to incorporate previously taught themes into all different learning styles, particularly through reasoning and examples. My overall reaction is that young audiences who see it may gain a good grasp of their own emotional development while also learning to comprehend the needs and character traits of aging individuals, which is a win-win situation for everyone involved. "Up" performs an excellent job of expressing the various phases of growth from a physical, cognitive, and socio- emotional point of view, despite the existence of a few minor mistakes in the depiction of aging individuals. Russel has different characters, first, Russell is a boy who enjoys having fun despite being an energetic, nervous, high-strung, and inquisitive youngster. Throughout the course of the

movie, Carl finds himself becoming more irritated by his conduct and demeanor. The fact that he was carrying chocolate with him is suggestive of the possibility that he enjoys confectionery, which may also account for the fact that he is overweight. Carl and Russell develop a rapport similar to that of a grandpa and grandson as a result of Russell's inquisitive nature and his resolve to assist Kevin in doing what is right. This energy that Russell exudes is somewhat reminiscent of Ellie. The degree of self-control that Russel is exhibiting is not usual for a child of his age and stage of development. The degree of self-control that Russel is exhibiting is not usual for a child of his age and stage of development. He is resilient and has the right level of control over his bowel movements as well as his feces for a youngster who is at this stage of development.
