Assignment #1: Formulate a personal written statement intersecting the self as clinician with the self as researcher. What are the contexts, politics, identities, experiences, support systems, and struggles that inform your path to your current degree process ?   I was born to two minority 16-year-old orphaned, high school dropout parents. My parents did not have many possessions, but I was given lots of love. I was raised as a Christian and morals, family, integrity, character, and honesty are highly valued in my family. I struggled a lot in life with the lack of support, school, money, relationships, and belonging. I learned to be strong and vocal about my feelings, so I expressed my feelings, and this led me to become good at affection, listening, and communication; therefore, I appreciated the little things in life. My mother always stated, “Do not be like me, be more than me.” My only goal was to make my parents proud and to honor their wishes to become the best version of me. At 16 years old I met my life partner and married him at 18. Together we have four wonderful children. We struggled together when our children were younger because we were not ready yet. As our children moved into adolescence, they needed more help and assistance with school homework. I could not help them and felt embarrassed in front of my children. Higher education constantly nudged me, and I decided to go back to school. In January 2001 I enrolled into the spring semester at Fresno City College and began taking general educational courses. There seemed to be a huge influx of a diversified population. I had the opportunity to network with many people from different geographical locations, cultures, ages, races, backgrounds, and exposure to many ideologies, beliefs, and past and current events. It almost seemed like a time when the world stood still during President George Bush’s presidency and his stance on the war on crime and the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. On campus, the engagements of students, 2

Even more, solidarity is shown on every network channel across the world. The hope displayed for those who were lost enlightens my faith and beliefs. I began to learn about things that were important to me such as health and wellness, mental health and fitness, childhood trauma and trauma-informed, suicide and suicide prevention, gender, and equality along with the lack of available community resources within low socio- economical, disadvantaged, impoverished communities. I valued life even more. What histories, ancestors, stories, and communities have surrounded you, and at what times? As a child, my parents would educate me about my heritage and culture. I had little contact with people outside of the African American culture. I grew up in an all-black neighborhood on the west side of Fresno, California. I heard lots of stories about my family of origin from the elders. The stories were negative and impactful considering I had family members who worked alongside Dr. Martin King and others who were very influential in 1965 in Birmingham, Oklahoma. The elders in my family always told stories at family gatherings about their past. Many of the stories were told from childhood to adulthood about my great-great grandfather and my great-great-grandmother of how they were able to escape slavery with their 11 children. Merciful strength and encouragement to go on and see another day gives me hope for a better tomorrow within the African American community. Why are you seeking higher education and why are you enrolled in this course learning about research methods?   Higher education will allow me to improve the lives of others by interrupting the negative patterns of behavior and to increase one’s life chances by engaging in positive 3

I am enrolled in this course to learn about and implement research in counseling so that I can utilize evidence-based practices as a useful tool in clinical practice. Research methods will be used to evaluate quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods as they apply to clinical theory and practice . What is your own relationship to cultural humility and how does this relationship impact your way of being in the world?   The relationship I have with cultural humility is that of acceptance of others' cultures and cultural practices. Acknowledging that there are differences and validating one’s cultural heritage respectfully, loving, kind, whole-being, harmonious, empathic, and equal. My relationship with cultural humility has impacted the way that I view others. I am not judgmental, or biased, nor see others as different other than their outer appearance. I learned that although there are differences between my culture and others, I feel more compelled to believe we are more alike. What we have in common is humanity and our existence of wanting to feel good every day. Where do you have room to grow in your practice of cultural humility? I think that I have room to grow in the practice of cultural humility in my continuance to learn where there is cultural competence and cultural humility. Areas such as self-reflection and making assumptions also needed to be guided in imagery and forgiveness. Mindfulness will help me stay informed in clinical practices and theory interpretations of cultural humility. What are how cultural humility will inform your engagement as a clinician-researcher? 4
Assignment #1: Formulate a personal written statement intersecting the self as clinician with the self as researcher. As a clinician, some of the ways to inform engagement in cultural humility are formulated in the (NLM) the National Library of Medicine which states, “ Cultural humility is a process of self-reflection and discovery to build honest and trustworthy relationships. It offers promise for researchers to understand and eliminate health disparities, a continual and disturbing problem necessitating attention and action on many levels. As a clinician- researcher the engagement, is to evaluate the past behavior of inequities and to become aware of cultural differences and their impact on health and more. Courage and flexibility to accept that I am different from other races and to engage in learning about other cultural backgrounds, cultural belief systems, and cultural identities to become culturally competent. Knowing who I am when working with clients will allow me to view the client as a person and human being. What are some of the key ethical guidelines that might guide your practice as a clinician- researcher?  To not show favoritism towards one group of people. Treating all individuals the same is ethical. Making sure that there are no differences among those I have as clients. Respecting the client's privacy, autonomy, beneficence, justice, informed consent, non- maleficence, confidentiality, avoiding deception, providing the right to withdraw, and informing patients of new information are all key ethical guidelines that I will work with in practice as a clinical researcher. 5
