Hello and welcome to Liberty University School of Government. See just some 50 quantitative methods of research. Module 1, introduction to qualitative research. Quantitative research in academia. The three research methodologies mainly used are qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research. In this course, we will be covering qualitative research. So what is quantitative research? Quantitative research is an approach for exploration. Understanding the meaning of individual or group subscribe to a social or human problem. It is conducted in a natural setting. You, the researchers involved. It includes multiple source of data. And it also expand existing or builds on new theory. The five designs are approaches that are used in qualitative research are ethnographic, phenomenological, grounded theory, narrative and case study. Ethnology versus phenomenology. Ethnographic. It explores cultural phenomenon based, I'm based in anthropology, usually in the natural setting, phenomenological explore the lived experiences. Usually in the natural setting. Grounded theory, not a theory of how something works and explore events using patterns based upon grounded data. Observation, interview, selective coding, data integration, what literature review, and also seek to construct new or modify their narrative. Usually a personal experience story. The relationship between the storyteller and the event. It's diachronic, concerned with the way something develop over time. And there's also a lengthy research process. Case study, case that it seeks to identify and understand social processes, uses personal interviews and literature review. Codes, data into category, can generate a modified or new theory, mostly used by doctors, students in dissertation. So when do we use quantitative research? Quantitative research is used when the researcher is not expecting to quantify or explain a phenomenon. Rather, this method is used when the researcher wants to explore, evaluate, observe the phenomenon in its natural setting. What are the differences between qualitative and quantitative research? According to Creswell, the distinction between quantitative and qualitative studies is framed in terms of using words which is related to quantitative, rather than using numbers which is related to quantitative. Or the use of open-ended question, which is related to qualitative. And the use of closed ended questions, which are usually related to quantitative. Quantitative research is inductive. It has a preposition exploratory in nature, asking the what and how. It's non-numerical. It's flexible structure, Open- ended questions seeking a rich information analyzed by theme. On the other hand, quantitative. Quantitative research is deductive. It has hypotheses. Exploratory in nature, explanatory rather in nature. It use numerical factors. It's structures, and it see cause and effect. And normal use closed-ended questions seeking definitive responses like Likert scale, type. Qualitative and quantitative approaches should not be viewed as a rigid, distinct categories, polar, opposite or diag tools. It is imperative to note that both methodologies represent different ends on a continuum. Are biblical reference for this presentation is taken from second Timothy Chapter 2, verse 15. Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that need it not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of true. Thank you for watching this presentation.
