STUDENT CONDUCT POLICY The disciplinary philosophy of the Laurel School District supports the teacher’s right to teach and the student’s right to learn. Behavior which stops the teacher from teaching and/or any student from learning is discouraged and will not be tolerated. We recognize that maintaining effective discipline and safety on buses, in classrooms, on campuses, and at school related activities is a shared responsibility for parents, students, and school personnel. Students inviolation of Board policy, administrative regulation and /or code of conduct provisions will be subject to discipline up to and including expulsion. Students may be denied participation in extracurricular activities. Titles and/or privileges available to ro granted to students may also be denied and/or revoked. A referral to law enforcement may also be made.
LHS Rules & Procedures Handbook p. 45 states that each teacher will provide students and parents with a list of rules and consequences, both positive and negative, which will be used in their classrooms. When students chooses to break rules and is referred to the office, disciplinary action will be taken.
Alignment of Expectations The Laurel School District Discipline Matrix is located on p.53 of the student handbook. There are five different levels to the matrix. To ensure there is cohesiveness of expectations teachers classroom expectations should align with the expectations outlined on the discipline matrix.

School Safety Act 37-11-55: Code of Student Conduct Adopted at the beginning of the school year Provided to all stakeholders at the beginning of the school year Shall include the following: 1)grounds for disciplinary action, 2) procedures followed for acts, 3) explanation for responsibilities and rights of students, 4) policies and procedures recognizing the teacher as the authority in classroom manners, 5) policies and procedures for dealing with students causing disruption to the school environment, 6) procedures for the development of behavior modification plans, 7) policies and procedures concerning gang related activity.

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR VS HABITUALLY DISRUPTIVE . Disruptive Behavior means conduct of a student that is so unruly, disruptive or abusive that it seriously interferes with a teacher's ability to learn or with the operation of a school or a school related activity. Habitually Disruptive” refers to such actions of a student which cause disruption in a classroom, on school property or vehicles, or at a school related activity on more that two occasions during a school year, and to disruptive behavior that was initiated, willfully and overtly on the part of a student which required the attention of school personnel to deal with the disruption

Behavior Modification Plans The district will develop and implement procedures for devising behavior modification plans under the school safety act. It is the district’s policy to have procedures for dealing with a student who causes a disruption in the classroom, on the school property or vehicles, or at a school related activity. Procedures for handling gang related activities will be specifically addressed.

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) Is defined as a school based collaborative process that included the parents and as appropriate the ch8ild to determine why a child engages in challenging behaviors and how the behaviors relates to the child’s environment.
