Branches of Philosophy Epistemology is one of the core areas of philosophy. It is concerned with the nature, sources and limits of knowledge. Epistemology has to main categories, the nature of knowledge and the extent of human knowledge. The nature of knowledge is the understanding of what knowledge is. The extent of human knowledge is how much do we, or can we, know. Metaphysics is concerned with seeking to know more about the nature of reality and the world. There are many different areas of metaphysics. It can be concerned with space and time. But it can also be concerned with identity and spiritual aspects. Metaphysics is very closely related to ontology.
Logic is the study of arguments and the formal description of reason. In logic, we study the rules and techniques that allow us to distinguish good, correct reasoning from bad, incorrect reasoning. Logic also deals with deduction and induction. Inductive reasoning makes a generalization from specific observations and facts, while deductive reasoning uses available information, knowledge, or facts to construe a valid conclusion.
Ethics can have different meanings behind it. The main term for ethics is the branch of knowledge that deals with moral principles. Ethics refers to morality, which involves the difference between rightness and wrongness, and guilt and shame. Ethics can also be concerned with examining how to live the best way of life. Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and appreciation of art, beauty and good taste. It is closely related to the philosophy of art, which is concerned with the nature of art and the concepts in terms of which individual works of art are interpreted and evaluated. Aesthetics has also been defined as critical reflection on art, culture, and nature. The word aesthetics originates from the Greek word ‘aisthetikos’ which means sense of perception.
