Module 11 – Honesty "HONESTY IS MORE THAN NOT LYING. IT IS TRUTH TELLING, TRUTH SPEAKING, TRUTH LIVING, AND TRUTH LOVING.” -JAMES E. FAUST Addiction of Duplicity As a result of dishonesty and distorted thinking, lies become an automatic way of life for addicts. In many ways, dishonesty becomes a form of self-preservation. It becomes far more tolerable to deal with one's current reality after creating a facade to avoid rejection, judgment, and stigmatization. Multiplication of Lies Lies multiply quickly. Each one acts as an incubator for the next, and before long you have a real infestation on your hands. When we are honest with ourselves and others, truthfulness flows from our hearts to our minds, manifesting as our words and deeds. Actions, such as keeping our promises, refraining from stealing, not cheating, and admitting when we've made mistakes all support the longevity, health and fitness our spirits. White Lies and Lies of Omission We've been led to believe that white lies and lies of omission are harmless. "My mom is going through a stressful time at work, so when she asks me if I used drugs today, fill just tell her no, to make her life easier." "No one asked me if I drank today, so it's not a lie if I don't mention that I stopped at the bar on the way home." Sometimes we tell a white lie or omit the truth with the best of intentions. But white lies can spiral into a cascade of larger lies. What's more, lies of omission can find us leaving our closest friends and families out of key parts of our lives. The simple truth is that a lie is a lie, no matter how large or how small. Our mental, emotional and physical health flourishes when we strive for honesty at all times. The Big Lie: Lying to Ourselves We are masters at deceiving ourselves. Betraying our own heart or our values is the most damaging betrayal of all; we have to live with ourselves more than anyone else we know, after all! In the same way that we exercise and eat healthy food to nourish our bodies, we need to nourish our spirits with honesty. Being honest with ourselves is one of the greatest things we can do for our overall health.
