My mom was denied a life-sustaining surgery based on her age as opposed to her medical history. I had no decision-making process. I reacted with
emotion instead of with facts. My moral intuition felt that this was wrong. Very wrong, but I did not know how to articulate why the decision not to treat was unethical. My personal biases were obvious. She is my mom, but the provider's age bias seemed just as obvious to me, The use of the Utilitarian Ethical Framework in this situation will help me
to articulate the ethical issue at hand. Help me decipher fact from emotion with critical thinking and logical reasoning. The Utilitarian approach focuses on the impact of a decision and views more good then bad as ethical (Guide to Ethics). In order to be an ethical decision the action must be weighed on good and bad impacts. Moral principles such as common good, integrity, and justice should be
considered (Guide to Ethics). I am actually going to apply critical thinking, principles, and different ethical framework to the situation regarding my mom in order to make a final decision on the course of action I need to take. Either legal action in civil litigation or a complaint process through a medical ethics board or committee overseeing the ethical issues and conflicts between health care providers and patients. This will be a very different approach for me. I believe it will eliminate
the battle between my heart and head; as well as, eliminate the chances of regretting my decision either way. Just being able to articulate clearly, and concisely is different from my typical approach. My mom was vivacious and full of life and she did not have to die.
