1 Module One Journal One: Diversity Wheel     Colleen White   Cultural Awareness Southern New Hampshire University   CJ-120: Cultural Awareness In Criminal Justice   Professor Tim Dawson   October 29, 2023
2 My personal experience with discrimination was in the form of systemic discrimination in the health care system. Systemic discrimination in health care is aimed at the elderly, and is experienced at all stages, all times, and all places providing care to the elderly. My mom was denied a surgery for an aortic aneurysm categorized as life threatening due to it's size. She was denied this surgery based on her age as opposed to her medical history. The age discrimination when viewed with the diversity wheel is reflected in all layers. The Era layer is representative of the current cultures view of the elderly, and the organizational layer is representative of the medical field. External factors such as family status, appearances, mental ability are seen with older patients not having family around them, appear frail, or take longer to express themselves. Daniel Perry, executive director of Alliance For Aging Research stated, "Ageism is a particularly apparent and especially damaging frame of mind that surfaces all too often in healthcare settings where older patients predominate.” (agingreserch.org) That is so true. Perry went on to say, " Like other patterns of bias – such as racism and sexism – these attitudes diminish us all, but they can be downright deadly to older people in receiving healthcare.” The challenges, effects, and consequences of ageism in healthcare are depicted on the diversity wheel. Factors in Era and Organizational layers aid in the progression of ageism. My mom died on April 20,2023, because a doctors discriminatory practice of ageism. She was vivacious and full of life, and did not have to die. Until now, I did not know how to articulate this issue appropriately. After reading and watching this weeks resources, I was able to research this topic with way better results. Unfortunately, the answers come to little to late for my mom, but I can respond to this
3 discriminatory method of practice in the right way in hopes of sparing someone else from enduring mental and emotional anguish I am forced to endure.
