In 200-250 words, respond to the following: Should the physician allow Mike to continue
making decisions that seem to him to be irrational and harmful to James, or would that mean a disrespect of a patient's autonomy? Explain your rationale.
Mike’s decision on his son James was based on his faith and beliefs. Spiritual care is a huge part of a patient’s autonomy. It is the absolute right of the patient to be able to make decisions about their medical care without the influence of medical professionals or practitioners. Healthcare professionals can advice and provide education to patients on care or procedure they are about to receive, but the ultimate decision on what services to receive during this encounter rests on the patient. It is possible that the decision a patient takes might seem irrational to the healthcare worker, but the decision could be deeply rooted in the faith of the parent and cannot be ignored. In this week’s reading, emphases were made on the importance of spiritual care to total healthcare. It is understood that healthcare services should be holistic not just focusing on the health aspect of the patient but also the spiritual part of care. Religion has a huge role in shaping the illness experience of patients and caregivers across different cultures. James’ parents were not ignorant in their care for their son. They searched for help in a spiritual way. They wanted to consult God and seek the supernatural power of God for healing. This is not a neglect of care. They brought James back to the hospital for medical care as his condition worsened. Although, they did not get the result they were hoping for, they still had the autonomy to make the decision for what they think is right for their son.

In 400-500 words, respond to the following: How ought the Christian think about sickness and health? How should a Christian think about medical intervention? What should Mike as a Christian do? How should he reason about trusting God and treating James in relation to what is truly honoring the principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence in James's care?
In Christianity the presence of good health does not deny the absence of disease and sicknesses. According to the bible, sicknesses and diseases came to humans as a result of the fall of man in the garden of Eden. Sicknesses and diseases are a result of human sins and shortfalls. Christians believe that God can heal all diseases. Multiple examples are seen in the bible both in the Old and the New Testament when God and Jesus healed the sick.
Christians should not resist or despise medical interventions. God gives the knowledge, wisdom for medical breakthroughs, and scientific discoveries that has healed uncountable people in the world. Although some churches forbid members from participating in certain healthcare services. Others allow members to freely participate in healthcare services that will be of benefit to them. Seeking medical attention is not a sin and should not be seen as such. Medical advancement that has brought about better health for the world is because of the knowledge provided by God. Mike did what he needed to do as a Christian, he had faith in God and trusted God for healing. The bible expresses that the human body is the temple of God therefore, we need to care for it. Caring for the temple of God in my opinion means treating the body right.

Starting with eating right, going for medical checkups, treating the body when there is a disease or illness, and exercising. Most medications were obtained from the use of things like tree bark, herbs, even fruits and vegetables, while others are synthesized in the labs. Mike as a Christian should have searched the bible for more information on what the scriptures say about the use of modern medicine. These information could have guided him in his decision to keep James in the hospital or take him to the prayer meeting. Though the intentions of James’s parent was not to hurt him or make his condition worse. It ended up being the case because by the time James returned to the hospital his condition had deteriorated to the point that he now needed a kidney transplant and continuous dialysis.
According to the principles of Non-Maleficence, actions that will intentionally or non-
intentionally cause harm to people should be avoided. Beneficence, on the other hand encourages
intension that will promote overall well-being of others (Non-Maleficence and beneficence. The EIESL Project RSS, n.d). Mikes decision did make James’ health get worse but it was because of
this faith that he made the bad call and not his intensions to make his son’s health worse. He wanted the best for his son but unfortunately the decision costed the poor child his kidneys. 3.
In 200-250 words, respond to the following: How would a spiritual needs assessment help the physician assist Mike determine appropriate interventions for James and for his family or others involved in his care?
Like other body assessments, people should also perform spiritual assessment. Physicians cannot
assume what a patient’s faith practice is. Attention should be given to spiritual assessment just as
it is given to the disease or illness that has brought a patient in contact with the healthcare
professionals, just like it is done for the body. Having solid information on a patient spiritual condition and needs furnish the physician with cogent information on the patient’s faith and how it is related to healthcare. In this case study, the physician’s thorough spiritual assessment will provide him information on how to advice Mike and his wife on their faith in Christ and why it should not be a deterrent to them to seek medical help for their son. He could also have asked if Mike wanted to talk with a Christian councilor who might be able to advise him that Christianity and medicine do not oppose each other. There are several examples in the bible where God’s children were advice to consult medical help. For example in Jeremiah 8 verse 22 “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?” (Holy Bible: New International Version, 2011). We also see a few examples in the New Testament. In Revelation 22 verse 2 “… and the leaves of the tree were
for the healing of the nations.” Having this information ready for Mike might have allowed him to know that he could still exercise his faith in God while his son gets the medical attention that he needs (Holy Bible: New International Version, 2011). In the days of the Bible, there was only a few physicians that were mentioned. There were more referral to the use of herbal remedy for treatment because that was all that was available for the people at the time (Fosarelli, Medicine and health care in early Christianity, 2021).
