Ethics Application Worksheet Instructions : You must use this MS Word template to complete this assignment. Please type your responses directly into this document. 1. Identify and explain in detail two scenarios from your life in which you had to break a promise and tell a lie, respectively. 2. Apply each ethical theory to your two examples. a. Explain what each ethical theory will say is the morally right thing you are obligated to do (i.e., keep a promise or break a promise, lie, or tell the truth). b. Explain what reasoning a follower of each ethical system would use to determine the right thing to do. 3. Lastly, answer the three short answer questions at the bottom of this template. Be sure to cite pertinent course materials in APA format to support your knowledge of these theories. NOTE - When finished with this assignment, every category box should be filled in. Personal example 1 Breaking a Promise Provide Necessary details Virtue Ethics Kantian Ethics Utilitarian Ethics When I was in undergrad at the University of South Carolina I had a roommate who had a problem with drinking that she tried to hide. One night after drinking a lot at a party she organized at our home she became very sick. She was throwing up non-stop and very lethargic. I told her I was going to call 911 and she begged me to say it was food poisoning that she had when the EMTs arrived because she did not want her parents to find out. I promised her that I would tell them that. However, when the EMTs arrived I did tell them that she had Virtue ethics support my actions based on my character (Dimmock & Fisher 2017). Breaking the promise was acceptable and appropriate to benefit the well-being of my roommate. Kantian Ethics suggests that the broken promise is reasonable when arguing people have a duty to do what is morally right regardless of consequences (Dimmock & Fisher 2017). Had I not told the EMTs the real issue happening with my roommate when they arrived it, she would have been initially treated for the wrong issue and therefore delaying proper care which would result in further harm to her health and well-being. Utilitarian Ethics focuses on consequences. Breaking my promise might result in further harm to my roommate but keeping it a secret as to not upset her parents might be justification (Dimmock & Fisher 2017).
drank a lot of alcohol because I was worried that she may not be treated properly and could result in further harm to her. Personal example 2 Telling a Lie Provide Necessary details Virtue Ethics Kantian Ethics Utilitarian Ethics When I was in high school, I snuck into my mom’s room and took a pair of her favorite earrings to wear to school. After school, I went to lacrosse practice still wearing dangling earrings and after practice I noticed that I was missing one. I searched all over the field with a couple of my teammates to no avail. I was devastated and did not know how I was going to explain to my mom how her favorite pair had gone missing. I kept quiet about it for several days until my mom went to look for the pair to wear one night when we were all going to dinner. I explained to her that I had taken the earrings out during lacrosse practice and put them in a locker and that someone had stolen them. I could I would defend my actions and show that it resulted from not wanting to upset my mom by making her angry with me for carelessly losing the earrings (Dimmock & Fisher 2017). Kantian ethics argue that it’s never appropriate or morally acceptable to lie, so if doing so, they are responsible for the outcomes (Dimmock & Fisher 2017). My original actions would only be accepted if I took responsibility for losing the earrings. According to Utilitarian Ethics, if I didn’t lie or do what I did, my mom would have been directly upset with me for losing the earrings but most of the blame was deflected away from me by stating the earrings were stolen from me at school. This goes against this ethic of having the best outcome for all individuals involved (Dimmock & Fisher2017).
not bear to tell her that I had lost them on the field and feel even more incompetent for doing so. Later that year during Christmas, my dad bought her a new, similar pair of earrings. Short Answer Questions 1. Which theory or theories (out of those listed above) could you use to justify breaking a promise and telling a lie? a. Virtue ethics emphasizes the development of moral character and the cultivation of virtues. In some cases, a virtuous person might believe that lying and breaking a promise is justified if it aligns with virtues like compassion, kindness, or honesty in the broader sense (Dimmock & Fisher 2017). For example, lying to protect a person from immediate harm might be seen as a virtuous act. 2. How might you respond if someone broke a promise to you or told a lie? a. I would initially be upset or angry with them for lying or breaking a promise. Then, I would try to understand the reasoning behind their actions by asking them why they chose to do this. With a calmer mind it is easy to put some thought and consideration into why this person may have done what they did whether it was out of fear, self- preservation, or not wanting to hurt someone. 3. How might you respond in a supportive manner that recognizes the feelings of others yet still holds them accountable for their moral decisions? a. I would attempt to recognize the fact that everyone has different opinions and views on certain things based on their moralities. I would attempt to the best of my knowledge and ability to understand why the individual is feeling this way. I know that we never really know what we will do or are capable of doing until we are placed in the exact same situation that someone may be facing. (USLO 2.3)
