Tamia Clemons Sunday, July 16, 2023 Cultural Relativism and Moral Action Assignment ETHC445 Week 1
For this assignment, I will use the moral dilemma I recently went through with a childhood friend I've had for years. So, a couple of months ago, I was out having lunch with a few friends and happened to spot my friend's husband out having lunch at the same place; we briefly spoke as I walked past and proceeded to my table. At this moment, I didn’t think anything of it simply because he works in real estate, and seeing him out and about with clients is prevalent. This client was just a little different from what my friends and I had seen; usually, when we run into him, and he is out having lunch with couples, or even if it’s a single person in the market, he usually brings his assistant. This time he was with a woman sitting at the table in the back of the restaurant, but you could see her leg was slightly drooped over his. So instead of jumping to conclusions, we just kept an eye on them. About an hour into our lunch, they paid the bill, kissed each other very intimately, and went their separate ways. He then came to our table for a “temperature check.” This is just checking to see what we saw. He knew we had seen something because he told us that “he was just finishing up with a client, and it was a surprise for Ashley,” his newly engaged fiancé. He bought us some drinks and proceeded to head out of the restaurant. As soon as he left, my friend looked at me and said, “What should we do?” morally, telling our childhood friend, whom we had known for over 10+ years, was right. There is also a chance that telling her it could ruin the relationship that we have had for years. So this was a decision we had to think about and decide whether it was right or wrong. I would say that for cultural relativism, depending on how their culture looks at monogamy, they would say we probably should mind our business. In our culture, we believe in monogamy and not polygamy. So I think culturally, it could go either way, but morally the right thing to do is tell our friend simply because if it were happening to one of us, we would want her to tell us no matter how we took it.
We decided to wait a few days together and then get her by herself to tell her. So we did wait until we could all go out to lunch which was about two days; we sat her down and decided to tell her. Her response completely shocked us to the core. She responded and told us, “Don’t worry, I know, and it's been handled” Little did we know she had been doing some digging herself and said they had been having conversations, and he mentioned his culture is vast into polygamy. That led them to a conversation about marriage and how she could not move forward if that were what he wanted. We had not even noticed that she no longer had her ring. She then explained how they didn’t think getting married was a good idea. She thanked us for doing the right thing and continued our conversation. Some moral decisions are very uncomfortable, but it is the right thing to do.
