Plato’s Apology- “Trial and Death of Socrates” 1. Socrates is charged with impiety and corrupting the youth. Socrates is accused of being impious and of corrupting young people. In his trial, these charges are made against him by Athens residents. Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth by allegedly guiding young Athenians away from standard thinking and motivating them to challenge social norms and ideals. In Plato's dialogues, specifically "Apology," it describes Socrates' defence during his trial, and "Phaedo," which describes his death by eating poison hemlock, these important events in the history of philosophy are famously explained. 2. Socrates claims that he is the wisest of all because he has a special kind of wisdom. This does not imply that he thinks he is the most educated or clever person in Athens, though. Instead, his claim is based on his philosophical method of study and awareness of his own limits. The Delphic Oracle considered Socrates to be the wisest of all mankind, which gave rise to his belief in his own wisdom. Socrates was initially confused by this declaration because he did not consider himself to be wise. In order to find someone wiser than himself, he then set out to interview several Athenians who were considered to be wise, including politicians, poets, and craftsmen. He found that although these people might be experts in their domains, they frequently thought they understood more than they actually did. Although they were sure of their knowledge, they lacked actual knowledge. 3. Socrates refers to himself as a gadfly because he compares his position in Athens to that of a gadfly in relation to a horse. Socrates believed that his philosophical questioning and critical thinking served the same purpose in Athens as a gadfly annoys and stings a horse to keep it aware and alert. He viewed himself as a kind of intellectual frustration whose job it was to inspire and excite his fellow citizens' brains. 4. Socrates statement reflects his beliefs in the importance of personal growth, moral and ethical development, and intellectual engagement are all components that have been examined. An unexamined life is still worth living, however because of life itself is a gift given through God and all that is in God’s good should not be destroyed. 5. Socrates can be described as a philosopher who is devoted about the pursuit of knowledge, morality, and the truth. His entire life is devoted to exploring these fundamental issues and developing critical thinking and reflection to advance both individuals and society. Socrates cares about finding truth and wisdom. Socrates is mainly engaged in using philosophical study to find truth and wisdom. He thinks that asking questions and using critical thought are crucial skills for learning and developing one's character and mind. He also cares about moral and ethics. Socrates is interested with what is reasonable and moral, and he considers virtue to be important to both one's own happiness and the well-being of society. Socrates is willing to die to protect his
moral faith rather than compromise his devotion to honesty and integrity during his trial, he decides to consume poison hemlock. This shows his relentless commitment to carrying out his philosophical objective. I don’t think he would fair too well even though he is committed to the truth, intellectual, and has ethical values I don’t think people would like him because he can be disruptive with his constant challenging questioning of societal rules. I don’t think we would execute him but I think he would get plenty of backlash.
