Anaijah Harris CJJ3544E_501_2228 11/1/2022 Does Gangsta Rap cause Violence? It is often said that the type of music that an individual listens to can affect their worldview and the way in which they see the world when they walk down the street. Given this premise, it can be seen how some people may be of the belief that “gangsta rap” can lead to people committing crimes and being involved in violence considering the main themes in “gangsta rap” usually depict the selling of illicit drugs, acts of violence and the mistreatment of women. However, the same premise may be made of movies that depict violent, illicit, and overly sexualized themes. It is my opinion that “gangsta rap” may influence some influential young minds to live out what is portrayed and depicted in these songs. However, it must be noted that the majority of people who listen to this music do so for entertainment purposes only and do not commit acts of violence or crime. It should also be noted that a myriad of different races listen to “gangsta rap” since this genre of music has become a part of popular culture. These people are not criminals. Subsequently, African Americans as a group are not a monolith and are not complicit in the delinquency of African American youth any more than any other racial group is to their own minors. There are a host or problems in the African American community but there also are a host of good aspects of the African American community.
