2 Developing a Written Sermon Manuscript Introduction: “Living Sacrifice and Renewed Mind” Verse one starts with a therefore. In This verse, ‘Therefore’ refers to what Paul has been preaching about in the first eleven chapters. God is all merciful. While we were still sinners, Jesus died for us. So, because God is so merciful and extends His mercy towards us, Paul tells us what to do. He says, “I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” Because Jesus was sacrificed on our behalf, He has rescued us from sin, so we can be made new. God has adopted us as His children, and He has a home ready for us in heaven and eternal paradise waiting. Because of God’s mercy to us, through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are to be a living sacrifice with a renewed mind (Romans 12 1-2). We will be transformed, with renewed minds, to live and honor God and serve, or we reject Him. Our response to God will considerably impact our lives now and for eternity. What have you said to God in your life, and what decisions are you making for Him? I: We offer ourselves to God because of His mercy (v. 1): Paul introduces God’s mercies as a strong argument for giving ourselves to God. “I urge you,” Paul said, “by the mercies of God to present your bodies” (Rom. 12:1). As we realize what God has done on our behalf through Jesus, the only way to respond is by giving ourselves entirely to Him. Sacrifice is a constant and continuous sacrifice, not something done occasionally; we offer it and never ask for it back again (Carr, 2003). Also, in this verse, Paul’s ‘Therefore’ refers to ALL that he has written so far in the other chapters (Burge & Hill, 2012b). He is the grace-giver, the dead riser, and the only one who saves us, which will help us in our transformation process. We are sinners, and sin has deadly consequences, yet while we were sinners, He died for us (Romans 5:8). Because of this, there is no condemnation for
3 us, and that is an act of grace and mercy, the ultimate gift, don’t you ever forget it. This should motivate us to give our lives entirely to God. If we reflect on His mercies, and we are not moved, we are in deep trouble. Paul says we should boast in our afflictions and let us enjoy our peace (Pfeiffer & Harrison, 1963). Where would we be if not for His love, forgiveness, and His presence in our lives? Think about this for a moment, think of our family, friends, our jobs, and our church. Do we merit this? Be honest and think about the wonders of God’s mercies. II. We offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice (v. 1) Something also very significant in Verse 1. Besides describing our new life in Christ as merciful, he also says it is worshipful. Before we see it as being compassionate, we must first see it as worshipful towards God (Piper, 2004). Paul emphasizes that the holy living rotates around surrendering. He describes three strong concerns: a) Three concerns in verse 1 : Challenge: Christians are instructed to surrender ‘(present) our bodies’ and our evil nature to Him. God calls on us to present all of us, even our will to Him. ‘Present’ is to ‘place at one's disposal,’ so we do not hold anything back, give it all to God, and surrender ourselves to him on His altar (Carr, 2023). The Cause: “Therefore, by the mercies of God” takes us back to what Paul has been saying. He said the redeemed are redeemed purely by the grace of God. Why would God control every part of our lives? Because He bought us, by Calvary, and we are His (1 Cor 6:20). This truth teaches us that we do not have the right to complain or say anything, but He does (Carr, 2003).

4 Sanctification: Our bodies are presented as “a living sacrifice.” We think of it as something dreadful because in the Old Testament, the animal was killed, its blood was shed, and the flesh was burned on the altar. The difference between God’s mandate to us concerning ‘sacrifice’ and what He mandates in the Old Testament is that in the Old Testament ‘sacrifice’ to die, and our ‘sacrifice’ is to live. How does sacrificing our bodies affect spiritual worship? Moreover, how does it deliver God’s acceptable perfect will? Stop for a moment and ask God to show you which changes are needed. Paul tells us not to be conformed to this world but to allow the renewing of our minds to transform us. In Romans 12:2, III: The Renewing of our Minds (Romans 12:2): In Romans 12:2, Paul refers to discarding our old external selves and “putting on our new covers, which takes place in the ‘spirit of our mind” (Verse 2). As we get to ‘know Him,’ our minds are ‘renewed’ as we get to know Him. “The mind is the acting ruling part of us; so that the renewing of the mind is the renewing of the whole man, for out of it are the issues of life” (Henry & Hayford, 1997). As the Spirit renews us, it is not just a ‘one-time activity’ like being born again. From the time we give our hearts to Jesus, we put on the ‘new’ man. Ephesians 4:24 shows us how this renewal continues throughout our lives, and we will be renewed in the mind of Christ every day of our lives. This is accomplished as we read the scriptures prayerfully and listen as He speaks to us. Paul states, how can Christians not be ‘conformed’ to the world around us? Furthermore, this is done by ‘being transformed and the renewing of our minds' (Romans 12:2). We must read daily Proverbs 30:5-6, listen to God’s Word, and study
5 and memorize it daily. As Jesus prayed to the Father, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17, KJV), as true believers, we have to do the same by sanctifying ourselves in His truth (Merida, 2009), we need to allow God’s truth to minister to our hearts. Let us ask ourselves, are we concentrating and making progress by learning and living God’s Word? CONCLUSION: The words of Paul in Romans 12:1-2 challenge us. He says that we are to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice that is holy and pleasing to God; this would be true and proper worship. He reminds us not to be conformed to this world's design but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The dilemma in living a holy life comes down to giving God control of our minds, bodies, and will, and living a worshipful life. Is this a description of your life today? Does God have total control of all of you? You might ask why I should sacrifice myself for God. It is because of what He has done for you. Jesus gave His life as the ultimate sacrifice. However, first, are you saved? Also, has God ‘renewed’ your mind? Furthermore, His transforming power allows the new man that is inside to live on the outside. Lastly, have you experienced and surrendered to God’s will for your life? I want to live a Holy life, how about you? Can you come with me to the altar today and surrender your ALL to Him?
