Guided Reading 14 Platinga’s Exclusivism 1. What two things does Platinga (Christians) believe that is not shared by others? That the world was created by God, an almighty being, and that human beings require salvation provided by God through the incarnation, sacrificial death, and resurrection of his divine son. 2. Who accepts (1) but not (2)? Who rejects both (1) and (2) yet are religious? Non-Christian Theistic religions accept (1) but not (2). Naturalists reject both. 3. Define Exclusivism. When one holds the tenets (or some of the tenets) of one specific religion as fact and believe that any other propositions (including other religions) that go against those tenets are false. 4. What is the intellectual criticisms of exclusivism? It is irrational or unjustified to think in an exclusivist way. 5. What is the moral complaints against exclusivism? It is arbitrary, or intellectually arrogant, or imperialistic. 6. What is the condition C? Condition C is being fully aware of other religions, knowing that there is much that at least looks like genuine piety and devoutness in them, and believing that you know of no arguments that would necessarily convince all or most honest and intelligent dissenters. 7. Is exclusivism in itself oppressive? It may contribute to oppression, but it in itself isn’t oppressive. 8. What is the more important moral charge against exclusivism? That there is a self-serving arbitrariness that is arrogant and egotistical in the propositions of (1) and (2) under condition C. 9. What does Platinga mean when he says, “as an exclusivist, I realize that I can’t convince others that they would believe as I do, but nonetheless continue to believe as I do”? That he can’t convince others to believe as he does, but he continues to believe as such anyway. 10. What are the alternatives with the proposition (1)? I can continue to hold it, I can withhold it, believing neither it nor its denial, and I can accept its denial. 11. What is the problem with the third option?
Those who believe their denials are arrogant and egotistical. 12. What is the problem with the second option? The second option leads to charges of egotism and arrogance in this way. 13. Explain Nathan/David example. In the Nathan/David example, Nathan explains a story to David that makes him mad and he explodes, however the story was just another way of showing David of what he did wrong to make him realize. 14. What does a believer think? And, how is this similar to a pluralist? The believer doesn’t really think the beliefs in question are on a relevant epistemic par. The pluralist thinks to withhold judgement. He knows that there are others who don’t think so and for all he knows that belief has an internal parity with his. 15. Could he be wrong? Who does his response here remind you of? Yes, I think he could be wrong.
