ME 381 HW 10 Review Questions 18.1 They allow superfine finishes, tight tolerances, and can be done to any material. 18.5 Wheel grade is the grinding wheel’s ability to retain the abrasive grit inside the bonding agent that makes up the remainder of the grinding wheel. 18.10 Truing is the process done to a grinding wheel that re-shapes the wheel into a perfect cylinder correcting any wear that may have occurred in the grinding application. 18.16 High surface finish abrasive operations include buffing, polishing, lapping, honing, and superfinishing. 19.1 Nontraditional machining processes are important because they allow easier manufacturing of difficult materials, they don’t cause damage to part finish found in traditional machining processes, and they make machining complex and complicated parts easier. 19.5 Water jet cutting uses a high pressure stream of water to cut through a part. Abrasive water jet cutting injects tiny abrasive particles like ruby or garnet into the water stream allowing it to remove material faster/cut harder materials. Abrasive jet cutting shoots the abrasive particles out with a jet of air as opposed to a jet of water in abrasive water jet machining. 19.8 The higher the current in a EDM process the faster it can cut through metal, but at the cost of the surface finish, similar to roughing/finishing passes in conventional machining. 19.10 The four steps for chemical machining are cleaning, masking, etching and removing the mask.
20.2 Metals are annealed to increase ductility and remove hardness, to remove internal stresses caused my forging/manufacturing processes, and to change the crystalline structure of the metal. 20.3 The most important heat treatment for steel is heating/quenching which forms martensite. 20.7 Hardenability is the ability of steel to be hardened by martensite formation. 20.10 Precipitation hardening is a heat treatment process where fine particles of impurities are formed and “precipitate” to the surface of the metal preventing the movement of the material structure making it harder and more durable. 21.1 Parts should be cleaned for health/safety reasons, to prep the part for further processes that need it like chemical etching, to prevent reactions like rusting from the oils in our skin to happen on the part, and to make the part look better. 21.2 Mechanical surface treatments are used to get rid of sharp edges and burrs, improve surface texture/smoothness, and give the parts a fresh shiny appearance. 21.3 The main contaminants that need to be cleaned from machined parts are grease and oils, chips and byproducts from machining/manufacturing processes, rust and other corrosion. 21.4 Chemical cleaning methods include ultrasonic cleaning, acid baths, base baths, solvent baths, and chemical emulsion. 21.5 Shot peening increases the surface hardness and fatigue strength of a metal by cold working it . 21.15 Anodizing uses electricity to change the surface “coating” of a metal as opposed to parkerization which add a super thin coating to the metal using acid and chemical processes. 21.22 Organic coatings can be applied via, spraying, painting, dipping, and flow coating.
