Homework 5 9.2 Production of raw rubber, compounding, mixing, shaping, vulcanization 9.4 Extrusion, calendaring, coating, and molding 9.5 Vulcanization improves elasticity, resilience, tensile strength, viscosity, hardness, and weather resistance of rubber by crosslinking the polymer chains using heat and sulfur 9.12 A mat is a felt consisting of randomly oriented fibers loosely held together in a binder 9.15 Prepreg has continuous fibers as opposed to randomly chopped fibers in a molding compound 9.16 In hand lay up, the workers have direct control over the orientation of the reinforcing fibers whereas in the sprayup method all the fibers are randomly oriented and distributed 9.17 Good finish on all part surfaces, higher production rates, better control over tolerances, and the ability to make more complex shapes 9.24 Pulforming is pultrusion with the added operation of a shape change in the length (e.g. a straight length becomes curved) and cross section (different cross sections throughout the length) 26.3 The processes in which the part are made widely vary, from extrusion through a heated nozzle, to powder sintering, to using lasers to cure a UV sensitive resin. 26.4 Geometric modeling, tessellation of said model, then slicing the tessellated model into layers for printing 26.5 Stereolithography is the most widely used rapid prototyping technology 26.6 Solid ground curing works by curing a photosensitive polymer layer by layer to create a solid model based on CAD geometric data. Instead of using a scanning laser beam to accomplish the curing of a given layer, the entire layer is exposed to an ultraviolet light source through a mask that is positioned above the surface of the liquid polymer.
