ME 381 HW 6 Review Questions 10.1 PM creates near/netshape parts, PM allows you to make specified porosity parts, you can use PM to manufacturing metals that would otherwise be difficult to do manufacturing processes on, PM allows you to make specialized alloys that couldn’t be made with other processes. 10.3 Atomization, chemical reduction, and electrolysis 10.4 Mixing, pressing, and sintering 10.7 A green compact is a powder metallurgy part that hasn’t been sintered yet 10.8 The particles get pushed into a more efficient use of space and then when they’re in the most compact geometric arrangement, the particles deform under the pressure 11.2 The process of ceramic making is prep of raw materials, forming, drying, and kiln firing 11.5 The ceramic plastic forming methods are extrusion, mold pressing, jiggering, molding, and throwing. 11.10 Traditional ceramics have significant amounts of water in them and can have large amounts in cavities. If a part with large amounts of water in cavities goes directly into the kiln, the heat will cause the water to turn to steam and expand breaking the part and possibly others near it. 11.11 Design parts to be in compressive loading, avoid impact loads, have simple geometry, use large corner radii, and account for shrinkage in the drying/firing process
12.4 Deep drawing transforms sheet metal into cup like parts. Bar drawing is used to reduce the diameter of round bar stock. 12.6 Increasing the temperature causes the “n” and “K” parameters to rise. 12.7 Cold working processes provide better accuracy, have better surface finish, better strength, and no required energy input by heating. 12.9 Friction is undesirable in metal forming because it impedes the flow of metal causing stressed to be formed in the part, it increases the energy required to complete the manufacturing processes, and increases the wear on the tools. 13.1 Bulk deformation processes are important because they have little to no waste, can produce immense changes in the geometry of the part without machining, and can add strength to the part. 13.2. The four basic bulk deformation processes are extrusion, forging, rolling, and drawing. 13.10 Forging is a bulk deformation process where a piece of metal is compress repeatedly by multiple impacts between a set of dies. 13.11 The three basic types of die forging are: open die forging, impression die forging, and flashless forging. 13.14 The two types of forging equipment are forge hammers and forge presses. Hammers deform the part with a series of repeated blows wile presses deform the part with a singular long squeeze.
