ME 381 HW 8 Review Questions 15.2 Machining is a subtractive manufacturing process removing material from the workpart as opposed to other manufacturing processes where the material is moved around like in extrusion and forging 15.4 The 3 most common machining processes are milling, drilling, and turning 15.6 Machining parameters include speeds, feeds, depth of cut, etc 15.7 Roughing operations are used to remove a large portion of the material without regard to the surface finish. Finishing operations are used to remove small amounts of material after a roughing process while paying attention to surface finish while sacrificing the rate of removal of material 16.1 rotational parts are made by rotating the workpiece around and axis usually on a lathe. Prismatic parts are made from some sort of cuboid or similarly cartesian shaped stock that is processed on a CNC mill or other non rotational machine 16.8 A part can by held in a lathe by: a collet, a chuck, the live center in the tailstock and a collet/chuck, and a faceplate 16.27 Vibration can be reduced by changing feeds/speeds to avoid natural frequencies, using larger/stiffer cutting tools, using smaller DOC 17.2 Wear, overheating, and fracture 17.6 Tool life criteria: cutting time, finish appearance, visual wear inspection, workpiece count 17.7 Toughness, temperature resistance, and wear resistance 17.15 Through tool spray, flooding, and manual application 17.19 Factors for machinability are tool wear/life, surface finish, chip removal, and cutting forces 17.20 Feed selection factors include tooling material, finish requirements, operation type (e.g. finishing vs roughing), and cutting forces 17.22 The cutting speed is lower for an operation optimized for minimum cost
