Workshop 1 – Measurement and Units - Preparation Rationale for workshop preparation An important goal of Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) is to develop problem-solving skills and to transition from a novice problem solver to an intermediate or expert problem solver. One key difference between novice problem solvers and expert problem solvers is the amount of information an expert problem solver has in their memory to draw upon in the problem-solving process and the number of connections between these pieces of information. Since these pieces of information and processes for approaching problems are stored in the long-term memory, they are easy to access and do not occupy the expert problem solvers attention. This frees up more working memory for the problem-solving task at hand. In the workshop preparation activities, we highlight some of the information that is useful to have in your memory and we attempt to help you make connections between these pieces of information. By writing down some of this information in advance, you will also have a summary you can refer to during the workshop session. Much of the information in these pre-class activities should be committed to memory as soon as possible through the study practices of retrieval, spaced practice, and interleaving. Your peer leader will introduce these study strategies over the course of the semester to help you get the most out of your study. Review of Foundational Knowledge for Problem Solving 1. List some common units that can be used for each of the following types of measurements: a. Mass a. Grams b. Kilograms c. Milligrams b. Length a. Meter b. Kilometer c. Centimeter c. Volume a. Litter b. Kiloliter c. Milliliter d. Density a. g/cm 3 2. Place the common metric units your instructor asked you to commit to memory (or listed in the text if the instructor has not specified this yet) in order of size, and write the name, symbol and numeric meaning or equality for each. a. Mege M b. Kilo K c. Centi c d. Milli m e. Micro I can’t figure out how to type this one f. Nano n g. Pico p 3. Write some key words that signify equalities in word problems. a. Is, Is Equal To, Equals, Yields, Results In, Is The Same As 4. List some key word that clue you in to what you want to solve for in a word problem. a. With the given Values, What is the (Blank), After Finding the given values what is the mass. 5. Describe in your own words what the dimensional analysis (factor label method) approach to problem solving entails. When is this a useful problem-solving approach? a. It is the use of conversion factors to get from one value to the next while eliminating errors.
6. Give an example of a number written in scientific notation and explain what the power (exponent) term conveys. How would you write this same number in decimal notation? a. 35.5 x 10 5 So, the decimal point will move five places to the right. 3,550,000.0 7. Explain how you can solve the following math problem without using your calculator. Hint: consider your answer to the last question. (1.5 × 10 23 ) × (5.0 × 10 11 ) = 7.5 x 10 34 a. So, you multiply or divide the 2 front values then add or subtract the exponents
