Discussions: A great place to work doesn't happen by chance. Leaders and employees must have the conscious intention of creating a workplace with positive energy. Leaders must establish workplace boundaries to deter the barriers that can damage a positive workplace culture. The individual employee also has a responsibility to engage in self-assessment, as well as identify ways to enhance one's positive self-image. Based on your readings this week (see Content - Week 5 - Reading and Resources), how can we improve communications with each other in a world that can sometimes be fraught with unreasonable work expectations and/or pressure due to the nature of our work? Be creative in your answer! Hello Professor and Class, In order to improve work communication with one another, every person’s job description and what is expected of them must be clearly and concisely stated. If those things are not communicated written or verbally, then of course there will be some miscommunication and one may believe that their work expectations are unreasonable so they may feel like they are under a lot of pressure. If the supervisor did not state these things up front or within a reasonable timeframe, then you should go to them and have them do so. Sometimes, a supervisor may be busy or forgot to do so, not saying this as an excuse, but I know it has been many of times that I had to go to my supervisor to ask for my initial (to know exactly what is expected of me) and monthly/quarterly counseling’s or performance reports (to know how I am doing in my performance and what I can do better or keep doing the same). So, showing some initiative is another way to improve communications and your work expectations. As a supervisor myself, I tend to forget some of those things so I always add calendar reminders because I hate for one of my subordinates to remind me to give them a counseling, that’s just me. I feel inadequate in my job performance or supervisory duties when that happens. Some other things that I do to improve our communications is that I have weekly office meetings at the end of the week to go over any task that was or was not completed. Sometimes those meetings are in the office and other times they are at lunch if it’s been a very stressful week. This helps everyone to relax and take a lot of that stress off our shoulders. It also gives me a chance to talk to everyone and ask how they and their families are doing.
