Description and Analysis of the Hawthorne Study [WLOs: 2, 3] [CLOs: 6, 7] Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum read Chapter 2: Organizational Culture and Diversity about the organizational culture and the diversity that exists in an organization and read the article Rethinking productivity in a remote working world Links to an external site. and A survey of perceptions of remote work and work productivity in the United States during the COVID-19 shutdown Links to an external site. . Given that the Hawthorne Study was designed to study productivity of workers when they are observed, you will consider what parts of the study are relevant to managing remote workers. For this discussion forum, imagine that during a weekly video conference with staff, you observe that two members of the team are always off camera or visibly occupied with other tasks. WK1DQ1-DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS OF THE HAWTHORNE STUDY For this discussion forum, imagine that during a weekly video conference with staff, you observe that two members of the team are always off camera or visibly occupied with other tasks. What
aspects of the Hawthorne study are relevant to addressing this sort of behavior? The Hawthorne Study, proposed tendencies among those involved or being monitored to alter or enhance their behaviors. Employees, irrespective of the era they belong to, always desire to be heard and valued; this is what motivates them and ultimately enhances productivity (Saha, 2018). The aspects that are relevant in my interpretation are, for people to be seen and for them to be heard. Feeling like they are part of the group or team creates for better engagement which should lead to better productivity. Taking on larger tasks without the fear of being judged makes those tasks less intimidating and can lead to someone wanting to show what they can do, and it leads to better performance. Workers within the team backing each other up and keeping everyone accountable is the social aspect. I have done this within my own personal teams and the response is that staff feel that someone cares, and they are willing to give their all for the group and the leader. Taking the time to recognize others strengths and abilities compliments the work that they do. References Saha, P. (2018, January 9). The ‘Hawthorne Effect’ in the modern workplace .
