Testes Histology Instructions: R efer to the “Histology Guide” resource (Table of Contents -> Histology Guide -> Search -> Male Reproductive System -> Testes) Please refer to the schematic diagram represented below. Answer the following questions. 1. What is spermatogenesis? The process of sperm production by males. o What is the location of spermatogenesis? Testes . 2. Identify the following cell types. A. Spermatogonium B. Sertoli C. Leydig 3. Identify the structure labeled D : basal lamina 4. Where in the male’s reproductive system does sperm cell maturation and storage take place? In the epididymis. 5. Which organs are the major sources of seminal fluid? Seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbourethral glands.
6. Please refer to the diagram shown below. Label structures A-F pertaining to spermatogenesis. A. spermatogonium (stem cell) B. cytoplasm of adjacent sustentocytes C. type B daughter cell D. secondary spermatocytes E. early spermatids F. late spermatids 7. Please refer to the histological diagram represented below. Answer the following questions. o Where in the male reproductive system is this histological slide taken from? Tubules of testes. o Identify the structure labeled A : seminiferous tubule o Identify the structure labeled C : Lumen o Identify the structure labeled D : basement membrane
o Identify the cell type labelled B : Sertoli o What is the location of this cell type? Within the seminiferous tubules of the testes. o What is/are functions of this cell type? To regulate metabolism at the time of spermatogenesis. o Identify the cell type labelled E : Leydig o What is the location of this cell type? In the interstitial space located outside the seminiferous tubules in the testes. o What is/are functions of this cell type? It is the primary source of testosterone in males. 8. Please answer the following questions regarding the hormonal regulation of spermatogenesis: A. What is the primary source of testosterone in the testis? Leydig cells. o Testosterone exerts negative feedback on the secretion of LH and GnRH . B. What is the primary source of inhibin hormone? Sertoli cells. o Inhibin exerts negative feedback on the secretion of FSH . C. What is the primary source of the androgen binding protein? Sertoli cells. Function? The primary function of Sertoli cells is to regulate metabolism at the time of spermatogenesis. D. Does testosterone require a binding protein for circulation in the blood? Explain. Yes, because testosterone is a fat- soluble hormone, which means it doesn’t dissolve well in watery bloodstream. Therefore, the body uses binding proteins to transport testosterone through the blood.
