Gokhale 1 Dayanira Trevizo Professor Adams HIST-1302.924 1 October 2023 Research Draft History has always struck my interest so when given the opportunity to dedicate my time to a research project I chose a topic that is prominent even in this generation. The importance of studying history is to prevent historical tragedies from repeating themselves. The 1918 Spanish flu epidemic grabbed my interest as this caused the life of 50 million deaths and when compared to an epidemic of this generation the number has decreased immensely World Health Generation reported 3 million deaths from COVID-19 as of 2020. This raises the question of how it is possible that in the modern day these epidemics still cause so many deaths despite our advanced technology. Research identifies elements that contribute to their significant social impact. In "Unmasking Modern Epidemics," Macip compares COVID-19 to the Spanish flu to highlight the unsettling pattern of increasing death in spite of our modern scientific breakthroughs. The article displays insightful analysis and makes us wonder why we are still susceptible to the devastation of such breakouts in an era of scientific miracles. The number of deaths in modern-day pandemic is concerning as when the Spanish flu occurred there were no vaccines yet created. It also raises the question of whether the Spanish flu epidemic would have been spread world wide or if it had more similarities to the ebola pandemic which was able to be mainly isolated.
Gokhale 2 The proximity of these two epidemics serves as a sobering reminder that technological advancements alone cannot protect us from nature's inevitable forces. It forces us to carefully consider the complex interactions between social and economic inequalities, interconnection on a global scale, and the ability of diseases to evolve. The terrible truth that, while we may have used technology , our hold on the delicate balance of public health remains unstable is made uncomfortable for us to face by Macip's research. It emphasizes the necessity of ongoing worldwide cooperation, study, and vigilance. We may create a world that is better able to defend and uphold the sanctity of human life by comprehending the intricate web of circumstances that contribute to the severity of contemporary epidemics.Despite the future of pandemics is unknown studying the correlations of both the spanish flu pandemic and modern day pandemics such as covid can help us prevent and manage future pandemics that can wipe out 50 million people.
