Alisha Burgos Professor Dunne HIS-E201 June 20, 2023 Final Exam The War of 1812: The War of 182 was an ongoing struggle that occurred between Britain and France but was also a war that allowed Canada a new sense of unity and pride. The War of 1812 involved many Native American tribes like Choctaws, Creeks, and Cherokees just to name a few. These tribes, however, did not fight along the United States, instead, they sided with the British because of the many tensions that arose. Of course, some of the Native American tribes were allied to France, but after a war that had occurred between the French and the British, leading to the victory of the British many of them sided with them in the hope that they would help them by preventing the Americans from advancing any further into their territories. After the Native Americans and the British came together, it caused a hostile environment between the two nations (the Americans and the British). Regardless of the allies that the Native Americans attempted to make with the British, it did not stop the Americans from removing a majority of the Native Americans from their land and further West. During this time when the tension between the British and the Americans was seen, the Canadian forces believed that it would be a good idea to attack the British forces in hopes that it would weaken their power. However, that did not happen. Instead, by the end of the war it merely just left a strain between the two. The Jacksonian Democracy: The Jacksonian Democracy is the only era that is named after a President, Andrew Jackson. The reasoning behind this era was named after him is because he did many acts that through our modern eyes now, are seen as unacceptable. For example on May 26, 1830, Jackson with the help of Congress was able to pass the Indian Removal Act. This would allow Jackson to have his military troops, push the Native Americans out of their land and further west. Of course Jackson not only did this by force, but he also gave them an ultimatum. He said that the Native Americans can choose to stay, but they would have to convert their beliefs to the beliefs of the Americans, which was Christianity, or they would have to move further west where they can keep their own beliefs. Those who choose their own beliefs were forced to walk west in what is known as the Trail of Tears. Not many Native Americans survive the movement from one land to the next, which is one of the sadist events in history. However, Jackson was not sad or regretted this decision, he wanted more power, and more expectations for his nation, to be able to gain more profits to come in. Another act that Jackson did was vetoed the Second Bank of the United States. The numerous acts that Jackson committed deserve such recognition in an era, but do not consider this a good thing, because it is not. The Cotton Revolution: Before the growing production of cotton, it was known that in the South and many other parts of the United States where they would have slaves, they would grow tobacco and rice. However, the growth of tobacco would often ruin the soil that it is planted on, and so the white
slaveholders had to continue to find new land to gain any sort of profit. It wasn’t until cotton came into play that many enslavers switched from growing tobacco and rice to growing cotton. The production of cotton grew even further when a man named Eli Whitney, invented the cotton gin in 1793, which led to the Industrial Revolution for both the United States and the British. However, it should be known that the production of cotton didn't start growing until after the War of 1812. Once the increase in production occurred, so did the need for slaves increased too. In the south of the United States, it was known to hold the most slaves, because the production of cotton, due to the soil, was greater than in the north. They would have the enslavers make more space for the production of cotton, by removing many trees and swamps to allow for larger landscapes. Manifest Destiny: The term or should I say the phrase, Manifest Destiny, was used in many instances throughout history. It was once used during the removal of the Native Americans from the west. It was also used when Texas joined the union in December 1845, as well as the Oregon Territory which was attempted to gain claim by President Polk. The reasoning behind using such a phrase is that many believe that they were chosen by God to do such things. Meaning expanding their land not only for having more space but to also grow their economic and political power. Many people in higher power like the Senate and the President, just to name a few, would use the idea of Manifest Destiny as an excuse to do anything they pleased, and would say it was God's will. Essay Option 1: I believe that America’s key “water-shed” moment occurred during the colonial era when the United States separated from the British. Of course, many people would disagree with this statement, due to many reasons, one being that there was nothing there that could indicate they were a nation, but the idea of them splitting from the British to become their nation, to expand and gain more power, is the United States gaining their watershed moment. It is what marks the birth of the United States. However, others would say that other points in history are what caused the nation to be born, but I think that the events like the birth of the Senate, House of Representatives, States (the unions that came together), the removal of other indigenous people, and the enslavement of African Americans are all events that caused the nation to grow into what it is today, and not necessarily the events itself that caused the nation to be born because it already existed once the people choose to separate themselves from the British.
