Alisha Burgos HIS E201 Professor Dunne June 7, 2023 Midterm Indentured Servants : Indentured servants were people of lower classes in England who consisted of males, to a lesser extent English women and immigrants to work in labor. This formation was done by planters in the mid to late 17th century when they needed people to work their crops in order to make profit. Indentured servants were hired in Virginia and in Maryland at this time, because they hoped to have better opportunities, in terms of making more money, however, they were wrong. The work of indentured servants did not last long due to two main issues. One being the diseases. Those who worked as indentured servants were not exposed to any diseases that caused many of them to die. For example, Measles and smallpox were the major diseases that were spreading at the time. Another issue that arose was the climate and the poverty that was in high demand, more than they would have expected. Due to this many people stop wanting to become indentured servants, and conventionally during this time, America was exposed to the Atlanic slave trade in which African Americans were already exposed to many diseases and were capable to continue the labor. Salem Witch Trials: The Salem Witch Trials were an era where many innocent people were accused of committing witchcraft. In the 17th century the beginning of a devastating time for many began. It started when three women (whose ages varied from a little girl to an adult woman)were seen to be performing odd movements, and when evaluated it was said that they were following the action of the devil. Of course, during this time many people believed in the Christian Church and how they should follow what God says. All of these accusations occurred in Salem, Massachusetts. However, those who were accused were able to live their lives if they confessed to another witch they might have known of. Of course, this was not a great justice system that was in place, because another innocent person can easily accuse another innocent person. Towards the end of this era, there were a total of 25 innocent people that were killed. Men, women, and children, all for the belief that the devil was controlling the people and god would have wanted them to fight back. This time showed others that the system that will be created should have certain guidelines that should be followed. For example, like the laws we have in place today. During the formation of the United States of the time, they did not have much of an order in terms of the laws in place, but now we do, because we want to avoid issues like the Salem Witch Trials from reoccurring again. The Columbian Exchange: In the year 1492, Christopher Columbus, traveled at sea to find Asia, however, when stumbling upon an island that he thought was Asia, was the present-day Caribbean, more especially Hispaniola which was between Haiti and Dominican Republic. Columbus even went further to address those he had found when he returned to Spain after leaving forty of his men behind, that he saw the Indies people. When Columbus went back to
Spain, not only did he return to say such a thing, but he also brought back the many crops, gold, animals, etc. that they had on the land, as well as brought back the stuff that was in Spain back to them. This process was known as the Columbian Exchange, because it was a trade of goods, but also bad. After all, Columbus also brought diseases that the people of the new land were never exposed to. The Columbian Exchange had its benefits. It allowed certain countries known to us today to be famous for certain dishes and if it was not for the transporting of goods from one place to another it would not have been possible. King Philip’s War: The King Philip’s War, also known as the First Indian War, took place during 1675-1676. The war took place in the southern part of New England. This war was the Native Americans' attempt to prevent the English from having any authority or control over their land. For most of the war, Native Americans were able to push back and attack many of the colonies, however, toward the very end of the war it cannot be said the same. Things took a turn once the Native Americans started to lose. It got to the point where King Philip’s and his allies' army began to weaken, allowing the colonies to gain back control, and take over their land. Before the killing of King Philip, the colonist, or should I say the English, decided that instead of killing all of the Native Americans, they should be forced into labor and become their slaves, just like the African Americans, who will soon grow to be yet another depressive era.
