The CRH hormone from the hypothalamus is transported via the hypophyseal portal system to stimulate the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to secrete the hormone ACTH which is transported by the blood to bind to receptors located on the adrenal cortex stimulating the secretion of glucocorticoids, primarily cortisol .
