Journal Entry: Prenatal Development During the prenatal development, the organ that gets developed first and foremost is the heart which also starts to beat in its 4th week. As stated in the textbook chapter 3 in the table chart 3.1 of the milestones in prenatal development the nervous system is the first thing to be developed in the 3 weeks but it is not an organ so, therefore, the heart is the first organ to be formed. Furthermore, in this website it states, “The first organ system to develop during organogenesis is the cardiovascular system. The heart has established its four chambers by four weeks of development.” The stage that is most susceptible to teratogens is the embryonic period since its at the start of the development. Although, all the stages have to do with the development of the baby so teratogens can still affect any of the stages that will leave a defect. A website called ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, also states, “ The embryonic period, during which organogenesis takes place, occurs between implantation at around 14 days to around 60 days postconception. This is usually the most sensitive period to teratogenesis when exposure to a teratogenic agent has the greatest likelihood of producing a malformation.” As mentioned earlier about teratogens being able to affect any stage stanforchildrens.org states, “Experts believe that teratogens can begin affecting a baby growing in the womb about 10 to14 days after conception. As a baby grows in the womb, teratogens may affect parts of the baby’s body as they are forming.” In the textbook in chapter 3 page 26, it states, “ Teratogens have their most damaging effects on systems that are developing during the time that the exposure occurs.” In other words, during that period of time teratogens could cause the most damage that they could inflict on the development of the baby. Mentioned also on the same page is that not only teratogens can cause harm but there could also be a vulnerability in the gene of the baby or the mother. It is crucial to have knowledge regarding good preconception because the parties involved need to understand what exactly is occurring when it happens as a way to get to know your body more. Now the reason to have good knowledge of prenatal care before planning to conceive is to understand the dangers, risks, and what is good for the baby during its development cycle until it is ready to be out in the world. This information is especially important for the parents who are having their firstborn since they have not done this before so it is good to know the ins and outs of the stages. Not a lot of people actually know what exactly is happening during these stages other than the general information that people know and that goes for the things not to do during pregnancy. Like me for example who did not know what was happening in each cycle and just knew the general info like the obvious dangers of not allowing the pregnant mother to drink alcohol, abuse drugs, or any activity that may stress the baby or mother.
