Chapter 22 (p. 197)
o
Fraud is common in healthcare. Why is it important for healthcare leaders to understand the threats of fraud and methods used to defraud a healthcare organization?
Understanding fraud allows healthcare leaders to keep an eye out for the warning signs.
In knowing what to look out for in terms of fraud, healthcare leaders can be proactive in coming up with a plan of action to defraud their organization. Fraud increases healthcare costs and destroys the character of those who are engaged in fraudulent activities. o
Choose three of the embezzlement schemes noted on p. 196. •
Discuss what actions you would have taken to prevent each of the events.
One embezzlement scheme that was noted was ‘a pharmacist who re-rang all the transactions on the cash register, so the dollar amount of daily transactions shown on the cash register tape were less than the amount collected. The pharmacist then pocketed the difference’. To prevent this, I would have implemented an electronic system that does not allow for changes after a transaction was recorded without the correct authorization. Another embezzlement scheme was ‘a director of engineering who used the hospital’s credit card for personal expenditures, such as gas for his private automobile and building supplies for an extension to his home.’ I would have the expenses that were abnormal be flagged which would allow for the card to be declined. A third scheme was ‘employees who falsified travel expenses or added hours to timecards not worked.’ To prevent this, I would keep a closer eye on both the travel expenses of
employees and hours worked. o
List three warning signs an employee may be involved in fraud.
1.
An employee is reluctant to give records
2.
An employee is always working late 3.
An employee never takes vacations and never delegates work
o
