The stakeholder I have selected for this discussion is in my opinion the most important of all the stakeholders as they are the reason we have healthcare, furthermore this type of stakeholder is you, me, and everyone in the United States. Of course the stakeholders I am referring to are the consumers. The consumers are the receivers of healthcare, some may refer to them as customers etc. the reason I see this as the most important stakeholder in the field of healthcare is because without our consumers we have no client to provide a service for. The National Institute of Healthcare describes consumers as “the key stakeholders in patient-centered and patient-driven care.” (Jennifer Sweeney NIH) I could not agree more with this statement as at the end of the day if no patients need treatment we would not have a need for the field. Later on in this same article by the NIH a study from Minnesota in 2008 is referenced discussing how a consumer advocate was participating in the decision making process of state legislation around Minnesota which led to the change of several policies that were not working for the people. One such example from this specific study is the patient empowerment training module which was a program to help engage patients more in their individual care (Jennifer Sweeney NIH) this was just one of many things the people of Minnesota were able to get changed just by having an advocate and a voice speaking for them in the legislative process. The role of consumer is so important to me
because while I eventually plan to be a professional working in the field of healthcare at the moment I am simply a consumer nothing more. Our opinions matter on our healthcare and the laws surrounding it. I believe the advocacy and examples I have given show that.
