Report
"Disability is variably defined because of its significant political, policy, societal and economic implications. Various models of disability have been described; the predominant ones being a medical model and a social model. Various agencies and institutions define disability differently serving their explicit narrow purpose (Patel, Brown 2017)". A physical disability impacts a person's ability to perform physical tasks or function in a physical way, it may or may not be developmentally related. Paraplegia is the inability to use the lower part of the body due to disease or injury. Mainly occurring from car accidents can have a detrimental effect on an individual that had use of the lower part of their body. The psychologists need to focus the majority of their time on psychotherapeutic interventions of processing emotions, emotional adjustment, and family coping. Educational efforts should be focused on coping and adjusting to the new injury. The medical model of disability is when a client is considered disabled based on a disease or health condition that limits his or her ability to carry out expected individual and community responsibilities. As a therapist it is important to distinguish impairment and handicap and disability. A deficiency is any psychological, structural, or functional abnormality at an individual level. Any limitation of ability to perform an activity as expected because of an impairment result in disability. An individual is at a disadvantage in terms of leading a productive life, and fulfilling his or her social role, because of impairment or disability, he or she is considered disabled. Clinicians fully embracing social-model views would require political engagement and a greater focus on societal, rather than individual, problems. Negative attitudes, beliefs, and associations extend beyond the general public. Therapists may find it beneficial to examine their own beliefs and expectations about disability, disability types, and anticipated outcomes when working with this population. Psychologists and therapists do end up in ethical quandaries, it's often because they unwittingly weren't able to connect with their client so as a result of ignorance about their ethical obligations or thinking they could handle a situation it backfired. It is imperative to find out the details of the client's condition and specific situation since all individual cases vary. Knowing who your client is and what their needs are what your role as a therapist is and being transparent about what it is that your goal for treatment is. Being mindful and setting professional boundaries are great effective practices. References Patel, Dilip R, MD, M.B.A., M.P.H., & Brown, K. A., M.D. (2017).
