There are many different assessments that measure academic achievement., But for educational teams who need a broad measure of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and math skills, The KTEA would be a good test to be consider administering to school aged students who are between the grades of preschool and 12
th
grade. Most test are chosen based on the student’s suspected disability. The Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement Third Edition is a norm referenced Individually administered assessment. The following essay will give a description of the KTEA III, give an insight on the reliability and validity of the test, and discuss whether or not the test are considered biased. The Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement III has two independent parallel forms, forms A and B. This test covers three different domains, reading, mathematics, and written language. The KTEA-III provides norm-referenced data and criterion-referenced assessments. This assessment measures all 8b achievement areas that are required for identification by IDEIA.
It also provides parallel and alternate forms for reevaluation and for measuring growth. THE KTEA-II can be administer by a certified teacher, diagnostician, or any school related professional, and is easy to use because of the clear and concise directions. The Kaufman Test of
Educational Achievement III measures student achievement on children between the ages of 4 and 25. “Uses for the test
include determining eligibility for classification and placement, identifying skill strengths and weaknesses, progress monitoring, and demonstrating the effectiveness of response to intervention (RTI) programs. (Mackler, K., & McCurdy, M. 2017). When evaluating a student for special education services the KTEA-II will help to see the SPED 5320 Week 3 Assignment: KTEA-III

student’s ability in real time, and assist in developing the student’s individualized education plan based off the test results. The Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement reliability and validity have been measured. According to Mackler & McCurdy 2017, “Reliability was computed using the split half method for all subtests except for the subtests that are timed. Reliability coefficients comput
ed for most compositescores were quite high, in the .80s and the .90s. The Oral Fluency composi
te coefficients were lower, in the .70s. The reliability for this composite was stronger at younger ages, which is appropriate, as this skill is called upon as a prerequisite for early literacy skills. These findings held true across all grade and age ranges. Of interest is the excellent reliability data (mid- to high .90s) for Letter and Word Recognition, Nonsense Word Decoding, Reading Vocabulary, Math Concepts and Applications, and Spelling. Somewhat lower reliability coefficients were found for Reading Comprehension, Phonological Processing, Math Fluency, Written Expression, and Listening Comprehension, ranging from .80 to the low .90s.:” Based off the information provided about the reliability of this assessment will make it a great assessment choice when working with school aged students. The assessment even has a
coefficient of .90 on the retest score. Although this is the reliability score the validity score is .70 an is intercorrelation between other test. Although this test is written in English, there are some areas that assist the test with some of the previous bias concerns. “Achievement test results may be impacted by cultural and language factors and level of formal education. These factors should be taken into account when interpreting test results. The manual states that student who are “proficient in English should be SPED 5320 Week 3 Assignment: KTEA-III

administered the KTEA-3. The test can be used as a motivational tool for low functioning or low performing students. “The KTEA-3 content has undergone extensive bias reviews and statistical analysis to ensure that examinees of either sex and from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds can be assessed with confidence. The KTEA-3 is an appropriate test to use in a psychoeducational evaluation for a school age child from 4 to 25. This is an individual administered assessment that is norm-referenced and
criterion referenced. This test can be used to determine student’s weaknesses and strengths and determine if the student’s are eligible for special education services. This test reliability and validity have been measured. Although there are some biases with this test, the student’s profile will be looked at upon administration of the assessment. In the case of a cultural or linguistic error the assessment data will be consider unreliable. References:
