Problem Statement
The general problem to be addressed is the increasing use of telehealth services by medical professionals, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in potential impacts to patients, medical professionals, and the healthcare system. With multiple healthcare policies being eased to accommodate such services, healthcare providers are at a crossroads to best manage the care of their patients. Both patients and providers have shown an overall satisfaction with telehealth services, “the majority of the studies showed a high level of patient satisfaction with the use of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic, and studies that evaluated clinician satisfaction with the use of telehealth reported a high level of satisfaction” (Andrews et al., 2020,
p. 4). Despite satisfaction with telehealth services, many in the medical community have raised their concerns over aspects of treatment such as the physical exam. “The true effectiveness of a telehealth physical examination and its subsequent impact on diagnosis, clinical management, and medical outcomes is yet to be determined in all settings” (Reeves et al., 2020). However, it is
likely that the use of telehealth services will remain beyond the pandemic and healthcare providers must make decisions regarding ”what services to retain or expand and how to measure success, ensure financing, and engage patients and staff when telehealth technologies are used” (Haque, 2020, p. 102). The specific problem to be addressed in evaluating the current and future use of telehealth services within the healthcare industry that result in potential impacts to patients, medical professionals, and the healthcare system.

Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore the understanding of the impact of current and future use of telehealth services on patients, medical professionals, and the healthcare system. The research will seek to determine the ramifications of current telehealth services use in rural and urban populations within emergency and primary care medicine and if variables affecting both patients and medical providers have an impact on the acceptance of telehealth services, with a goal of determining if there are any existing factors that need mitigating or new factors that need implementing to expand usage and to increase the success of such services. The research will also seek to determine the impact the United States healthcare system has played in both the current use of telehealth services during the Covid-19 pandemic and the expansion of such services into mainstream medicine beyond the pandemic, to determine
if any necessary changes are needed to streamline the use of telehealth services for both patients and medical providers. The larger problem of limited access to healthcare and technology in impoverished and rural communities is explored through an in-depth study of the current and future adaptation of telehealth services, including its effect on patient outcomes, medical reimbursements, and healthcare policies.

Significance of the Study
Through comprehensive exploration of this study on the current and future impact on patients, medical providers, and the American healthcare systems as a result of increasing telehealth services due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the benefits and drawbacks of these types of services will be examined for various subsets of the population. By completing the study with consideration of multiple variables for both patients and medical providers, the research will be able to illustrate the benefits of telehealth services beyond the Covid-19 pandemic for some while simultaneously scrutinizing the limitations of such types of services that others may face. The research will also evaluate the role the American healthcare system has played in both expanding the use of telehealth services during the pandemic and reviewing the planned changes to encourage sustainability of such types of services moving forward.
In this regard, the greater issue of gaps within the healthcare system for rural and lower socioeconomic status communities will be investigated and emphasized. Moreover, this research will elucidate how the digital divide further delays the adaptation of telehealth services and, in return, prevents some demographics from accessing care. The research will also demonstrate the
existing policies within the American healthcare system that only further disenfranchise certain communities.
In addition to this, the overview presented in this research will push for new methods of training for medical providers for telehealth services and provide suggestions on means of increasing telehealth acceptance and adaptation in previously disenfranchised communities. The research will also demonstrate how certain changes in policy can ease the transition of the American healthcare system to allow for sustainable and wide-range use of telehealth services.
