Reflection Posts Sarah Maguire RN Chamberlain University NR500NP-63662: Foundational Concepts and Advance Practice Roles Dr. Cristina Myers December 19, 2020
Reflection Posts Week One Reflection on Learning A concept in this week’s reading is the differences between the Advance Practice Registered Nursing (ADRN) roles. This is intriguing, as it provides an example of why furthering education and defining roles is necessary. When finding absence or insufficiencies of healthcare services, we must know how to provide evidence-based practice care. Becoming a master’s prepared nurse is vital for our communities. Within that is knowing how to properly research and understand the results of that research. To prepare for my role as a master’s prepared nurse I will use this concept to look for new knowledge continuously. Week Two Reflection on Learning After researching the different roles in depth, I found that I am looking forward to the wealth of knowledge that is obtained through primary care. I have always felt a pull towards understanding more about healthcare. The more I progress towards this role the more I will be able to learn and understand about it. I am concerned with the identity loss that occurs during a major transition. I know that I will be working almost the entire time that I am a student. I can understand how that can affect the transition into a higher role. It is hard to see yourself as something until you are there. I am glad that my research for helpful strategies was a success. I plan on emerging myself in the role as soon as possible, thankfully I have a few friends who are Nurse Practitioners. I also plan on finding a preceptor program in which I feel comfortable. It is important for any student to feel confident asking questions. The more any student is faced with
uncomfortable situations prior to graduation, the more confident the student will be after graduation. Week Three Reflection on Learning One of the concepts that stood out to me this week is self-reflection. I have always had a hard time with understanding myself. I find that it especially important to have stability in yourself. If you are not secure in how you feel and why, you will find yourself questioning other on their statements. This causes lapse in healthcare. We need to be asking the patient what is doing on with them instead of just assuming. I have seen the effects of this through my experience as a Registered Nurse. When patients are not integrated into their own care, they tend to have repetitive problems. In my future practice, I want to approach my patients holistically. I do not want to focus on just a diagnosis. I want to understand their thought process. I wat to understand their culture. The more that I learn about other the better care I can provide. I believe that the more I accept and learn about other cultures the better care I will provide for my patients. Week Four Reflection on Learning Becoming a provider of healthcare means that my knowledge can influence others to promote greater outcomes for my patients. This has always been important for me during practice. I feel that I personally related to the direct connective leadership. I feel that I have more control over my own self than I do others. I strive being autonomous. When a problem is present, I feel that I take charge to ensure that my patient’s rights are upheld. I also really feel that researching the nurse practice act really help me consolidate a lot of information that I had not previously taken the time to do so. I found it interesting to find that Illinois granted full practice authority. I think that I had fallen bias to Illinois being the harder state to get a license in. I have

always wondered why Illinois has not became a compact state for Registered Nurses. I can apricate researching the scope of practice to its fullest. Week Five Reflection on Learning What I found most interesting during this week’s reading and discussion posts was the different issues we see across the healthcare system. It is easy to feel like we are the only ones taking on certain challenges. I saw a lot of passion within the post of my classmates when they posted ways to solve their own concerns. I related closely to staffing ratios. Just today I saw an article about how many Nurses have stepped away from bedside nursing due to COVID-19. With this pandemic occurring the healthcare system has changed drastically. Nurses per patient ratios have dipped lower than before. We are struggling, yet we are struggling together. I feel that the more we work together the better off we will be. Healthcare has always been a team sport. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner was a decision I made to help the population around me. Understanding this position fully and what it encases is vital to my success as a graduate degree nurse. Week Six Reflection on Learning I have really gained confidence in my ability to research appropriately and thoroughly. I find that I have a drive for finding solutions that are new! Due to that drive, I feel that I will engage in scholarship relatively quick during my first year as a Nurse Practitioner. I still have this feeling that COVID-19 will be affecting healthcare practice when I begin to practice. Therefore, I see social distancing, limited staff, limited visits, and decreased patient satisfaction. I want my patients to have their rights fulfilled and I want to practice the best quality of care
obtainable so I do not think it will keep me down long. I really had fun creating a PowerPoint presentation for this week’s assignment. Week Seven Reflection on Learning Healthcare is a rough setting of employment. I found this out early in the game, I feel that I am not the only one. This had a massive impact on my view of nursing. I convinced myself that I did not even want to be a Nurse for a short while. I pursed my dream job as a veterinary technician. I loved it but, I still found my way back into healthcare. It is the kind of burn that feels good, like working out. I honestly think that only healthcare workers understand this. As I move towards my role as an APRN, I will help foster a healthy atmosphere by being completely open to my staff. I want them to know that no question is a dumb question. There will be no talking down on it will only be teaching and learning. There is not a single healthcare provider that knows it all. Therefore, we learn together. A few self-care practices that I engage in are meditation, yoga, journaling, and I talk to a counselor. All this fosters self-love and allow positivity into my life. Thank you for your posts this week. It can be hard to open up and talk about the things we face in healthcare. Just remember we are all in this together. Week Eight Reflection on Learning During week eight, I was able to reflect on previous assignments and choose a few that I found important. Going back through my assignments and the research that I have done over eight weeks allowed me time to process new information from previous experience. I feel that this is important for education. I really enjoyed the discussion posts, they provided other different points of view from my classmates on the same assignment. A friend at work make a cool statement just the other day. She said that “Everyone perceives things differently. I opened
my cart one day and saw an open insulin syringe. A nurse beside me said it was the wrong dose of insulin for any of the patients on that hall. Another nurse stated that she could get stuck by that needle and I said that someone was going to stick a dirty needle into a patient.” I felt it was a great example of perception. Therefore, thank you Dr. Myers for the assignments and the different viewpoints!
