What does Giovanelli say is the relationship between writing
and revision? Explain with specific references from the
reading to show evidence of careful reading.
Laura Giovanelli believes that revision is an essential part of
the writing process and that it is not a sign of weakness or
poor writing. She thinks that revision involves working
through fundamental questions about purpose, evidence,
and organization. Giovanelli uses examples such as Martin
Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream".
Do you think you produce better work when you revise? Why
or why not?
Yes, because when I review the final work and read it again, I
can notice some errors or details that I can improve in my
writing process. In addition, it allows me to have my own
feedback, which is beneficial to be able to have a better final
work.
On page 105, Giovanelli references Anne Lamott’s “Shitty
First Drafts.” Now that you have read both Lamott’s ideas
about early drafts and Giovanelli’s ideas about revision, how
do you understand the relationship between shitty first drafts
and revision? Are both necessary aspects of the writing
process? Why or why not?
Shitty first drafts, as mentioned by Anne Lamott, refer to the
initial versions of a writer's work that are often messy and
imperfect. Revision, on the other hand, involves making
changes and improvements to the draft. Both shitty first
drafts and revision are necessary aspects of the writing
process, because this let you make mistake and improve
them, to make a good final writing.
Think about the examples Giovanelli gives with Martin Luther
King, Jr. What do you think that example shows about "final"
drafts? What does it show about MLK's attention to his
audience?
The example of Martin Luther King,
shows that "final" drafts
are not necessarily
static. I his speech "I Have a Dream"
went through multiple revisions and adaptations for different
audiences and purposes. This demonstrates King's careful
attention to his audience and his desire to connect with them
effectively. He continuously revised and adapted his speech
to resonate with new audiences. King's example highlights
the importance of considering the audience and tailoring the
message accordingly, even in "final" drafts.
Choose one specific idea about writing that Giovanelli shares
and explain whether your own experiences as a writer
support or disagree with this idea.
One specific idea of Giovanelli is that all writers with no
exception, need revision to improve their writing. In my own
experience I agree with this,
because many times when I
finished an essay I revise my whole text and looked for any
error or misunderstood that could exist, is also help to
examining the purpose, evidence and organization of my
own writing.
