1. How does Lorde describe herself on page 854? Lorde describes herself as an educator as a black lesbian feminist. Since she is categorized into groups of the oppressed. 2. Lorde says that society expects that "...it is the responsibility of the oppressed to teach the oppressors their mistakes" (pg. 854). What does she mean by that? She also says that is a constant drain of what for people without power? I believe that Lorde means that it should not be just the responsibility of the oppressed to teach their oppressors. There has to be a collective effort that is not there in American society. She is saying there is a constant (mentally, emotionally, physically) battle with the oppressed/less power constantly having to educate. 3. Lorde says (on page 855) that there are certainly real differences between people. But those differences aren't what separate us. What does separate us? “It is rather our refusal to recognize those differences, and to examine the distortions which result from our misnaming them and their effects upon human behavior and expectation” (Lorde 855). Racism, sexism, ageism, hetrosexism, elitism, classism is all things that separate us. We do not spend our energy on exploring but putting up boundaries to these differences. 4. On page 856, Lorde says that to examine literature written by Black women requires recognizing them as more than "familiar stereotypes provided by this society." Write a sentence or two that turns this claim into one supporting media literacy. Lorde's assertion points out the importance of media literacy by emphasizing that, in order to truly understand and appreciate Black women's literature, one must go beyond the familiar stereotypes perpetuated by society and engage in critical analysis that recognizes the complexity and diversity of their literature, a principle that also applies to critically analyzing media representations of minority populations. 5. How does a decision by a literary magazine to accept 'only prose' submissions for an upcoming issue favor a certain type of creator? A literary magazine's choice to accept "only prose" submissions for an upcoming issue may favor a particular sort of author by giving prose writers preference over authors who create poetry or experimental works of literature. This bias may disadvantage authors who excel in non-prose forms and who use a variety of literary styles to express their perspectives. Unintentionally promoting literary biases and limiting the diversity of voices and styles in the magazine are both potential consequences, which may also prolong the underrepresentation of some sorts of producers in the literary world.
