Case Study 4: Pinworms (Carrie) Read the study on the bottom of page 167. Respond to each question making sure that when you have completed a response to all questions that you have met all 8 of the requirements listed above. The teacher noticed that Carrie seemed quite restless today and was having difficulty concentrating on any task that she started. She continuously squirmed, whether in her chair or sitting on the floor. On a number of occasions, the teacher also observed Carrie tugging at her underwear and scratching her bottom. She recalled that Carrie's mother had mentioned something about getting her younger brother tested for pinworms and wondered if this might be what she was observing. 1. If you were the teacher, what actions would you take in this situation? It is a very good possibility Carrie has contracted the pinworms as well. She should be removed from the classroom and her mother notified and contacted. I would then be sure to disinfect all surfaced as soon as safely possible. I would talk with the children and be sure they are all remembering good hygiene and washing their hands frequently, as well as keeping their fingers out of their mouths. 2. What control measures should be implemented? At school? At home? At school, going over proper handwashing techniques in the classroom and reminding children to keep their hands out of their mouths is essential. Carpeted areas should be thoroughly vacuumed every day. It is also important to be sure the toilets and sinks are being disinfected at least once per day. At home the parents should be sure all family members are treated at the same time, whether they are currently carriers or not. Pinworms are highly contagious and can continue in a never- ending cycle if all family members are not treated at the same time. Bedding and linens should be changed daily and washed in the hottest water possible to kill any eggs that may be present. 3. When can Carrie return to school? Carrie is allowed to return to school after she has been tested and shows a negative test result, or if positive, she may return to school after the initial dose of medication. 4. Is this a reportable illness in your state? Instances of pinworms is not currently a reportable illness in the state of Florida.
