Summary First article
The Dalai Lama introduced the idea of “wise selfishness,” which encourages recognizing that acting “altruistically” also benefits oneself.
Cultivating a compassionate mindset can lead to a virtuous cycle of increased well-being and success.
Strategies for wise selfishness include loving-kindness meditation, increasing positive interactions, dedicating daily tasks to benefit others, and embracing small opportunities for generosity.
Second article: The author gives a little insight and some tips on what one can do to be happy.
Acknowledge negative thoughts and worries instead of trying to suppress them.
Treat yourself as you would a friend when feeling negative about yourself.
Challenge irrational thoughts using Socratic questioning.
Writing and rewriting personal narratives can lead to behavioral changes and improved happiness.
Writing and rewriting personal narratives can lead to behavioral changes and improved happiness.
Assessment
Both articles aim to inform readers that being selfish about our happiness can sometimes be beneficial. The rationale is that if we don't take care of ourselves, nothing else gets done. As the only person living our lives, we should enjoy it, or we're wasting it trying to please others.
Application
I prioritize my own well-being in my personal life. If I am struggling, I will not pretend otherwise just to appease others. I cannot be there for others if I am consumed by my own challenges. It is
crucial that I take care of myself first so that I can support and uplift those around me.
