FINAL REFLECTIVE 2 Final Reflective - Summary Technology is changing at ever increasing speed. The interconnectedness of the modern world provides both opportunities and pitfalls. Trans-oceanic cables and low earth orbit satellites have provided near instantaneous communications capabilities. The Internet brought large scale information sharing out of the realm of government and large corporations and into small businesses, homes, and even our pockets. At first the government, educational institutions and businesses were the only information publishers on the Internet, but Web 2.0 technologies allowed any Internet user to become a publisher. The evolution of social media sites and development of information sharing applications for mobile phones allow users to share information about themselves, their world and their world view instantaneously with everyone who is connected to them online. As people begin to share more of their lives online, there is an increasing awareness of privacy concerns and information security. For instance, when someone goes on vacation and share vacation photos from Florida when they live in New York everyone with access to that information knows that the traveler’s home in unoccupied. When the sorority girl shares a photo of her enjoying a beer while she is underage with a social media website that photo is available to a future employer. It is technically possible to intercept unencrypted emails sent across non- secure connections, to listen in on mobile phone conversations, and to view information on unsecured home wireless networks. There are times when the media brings data breaches to the public’s attention but most potential privacy breaches remain largely unreported and unaddressed. Privacy protection becomes more difficult as more technology is used in our everyday lives. If you have seen a commercial for a home security system that includes two-way voice
FINAL REFLECTIVE 3 communication and a camera, have you asked the vendor what policies and procedures they have in place to ensure that their employees (or perhaps hackers) are not using that equipment as a window into your home? The issue of data privacy or misuse is not limited to corporations. South Carolina’s Department of Revenue recently suffered from a data breach that exposed the personal information of state residents and businesses. ( Constantin, 2012) South Carolina did not encrypt the social security numbers in their database and the system was breached before a scheduled system upgrade that would have protected the privacy of residents. As technology continues to become more sophisticated, both corporations and government entities must become more responsible with their handling of that information. CSR policies should include clear reporting requirements detailing how personal data is used, shared and secured.
