Journal Of Interpersonal Violence: Outline
1) Introduction
a.
To understand why the intervention that was proven to be successful had an effect and for
which groups it was most effective.
b.
To evaluate change due to the intervention through mediation and moderation analyses of
probable risk and protective factors, focus on factors that are to change through the intervention (parenting skills and improved mental health, demographic factors) to understand what predicts change in child adjustment.
2) Theory: Literature Review
a.
Rate effectiveness of intervention to families who have been exposed to IPV long term vs
short term.
b.
Author used previous studies to show and contribute to his own research; they favor the interventions being effective.
3) Practice: Interview/Case Study
a.
Child behavior and adjustment problems/ mother’s mental health and parenting. b.
Theory
assumes an outcome,practice
allows you to test the theory
to see if it is accurate.
4) Recommendations
a.
Children see more mild physical violence than serve physical violence, the more interventions a child received, led to a reduction in internalized trauma(the more violence
seen, the more internalized trauma. Correlates mothers likeness of ptsd with amount of violence.
b.
Recommend to increase pooling size and not minimize it to those who want help but include also those who may not be as keen on seeking help; recommend to add on how the race of a family affects dynamics and ehther there is an increase in internalized trauma and ptsd. Include fathers within the next study since it can be discriminatory and making assumptions that men cannot be a victim of domestic violence.
5) Conclusion
a.
Wrap up your argument (no new information!) Children who are less affected by these violence do better compared to those who are traumatized in some way or other. There is also a significant change seen towards children whose mother’s condition improves from post traumatic stress. We can say improvement in a mother's condition helps children cope with trauma and interpersonal violence.
b.
Revisit the thesis statement (support or disprove?)
It supports the thesis statement.
c.
Concluding remarks
The authors point out that the current intervention programs are not diverse enough to cater to every individual case, despite yielding positive results. They suggest that the victims of IPV may benefit from additional services that would tailor to tackle each family’s unique dynamics. They also suggest that more strictly controlled studies are recommended for identifying factors which have contributed to the successes of the current intervention programs, so that they can produce better programs for the ones in need.
