Since the pandemic, many teachers have been teaching online and have expressed their disappointment with having to teach students in this format. For this assignment, you will be a new teacher who has been told that you will be teaching students online.
Below list three strategies that you will use to make online teaching and learning more effective for both you and your students. You will choose a specific grade level (Pre-k through 12) and the type of classroom you would like (Inclusion, General Education, Special Education, or Bilingual Education). List the 3 strategies and explain in
narrative format
how you would apply the strategy and what it will help with to make online teaching and learning better.
For this assignment I will be choosing a 2
nd
grade general education classroom. Firstly, in order to teach students online effectively, not only do you want to look presentable, but
the location of the online meeting should also look presentable for children. For example, you don’t want just blank grey walls behind you, it should be fun, maybe a few posters and things that are engaging for the students to look at. The first strategy is to keep the class interactive! In face-to-face classes it’s easier to keep things upbeat and interactive, but online this is definitely a challenge for many. Instead of assigning or showing long texts for the kids to read, I would plan activities to do throughout the web call that will keep the students clicking, typing, or talking throughout the lesson. The ways this can be executed are asking lots of questions, including games, and making sure learners have to physically do things like use drawing tools or type in dialogue boxes. My freshman year at Buffalo State my one hybrid class would meet on zoom, and during that zoom we would break out into different rooms. These rooms were a group of 3-4 students, and we worked on activities
like that, and the professor could go around to each room to keep us on track and to ensure we weren’t talking about other things and that we were focused on our work. I would also do this so
students could still do small group activities like in a classroom. The second strategy is to make sure my students feel motivated! Being online can cause students to feel like they’re isolated, which results in them being demotivated. The students could think that no one will notice or care if they miss a class or find it all too tempting to not log in to a virtual classroom if they’re feeling tired. To avoid things like that you can help your students feel motivated. You need to learn your students’ names and make sure you use them! Always do check-ins with the child to ensure they are doing/feeling ok and if there is anything they may
need extra assistance on. Give regular feedback on students’ work, and aim to be positive, and encouraging. The third strategy is to make use of a number of technological tools.
When it comes to online learning, making use of technology is critical to success. Teachers must prepare in a variety of ways to incorporate technology into their classrooms, especially if they are primarily communicating with students online. WGU provides a master's degree in learning and technology that may assist instructors better comprehend technology and integrate it into their classrooms. Teachers should devote the first few days of class to assisting pupils in grasping the technology and learning how to use it. Practice activities are a wonderful approach for students to gain a feel for the technology and make sure they understand what they're doing by asking questions and receiving assistance before they start working on projects. This time on the learning curve and hands-on practice will aid students and those instructing them in being prepared and ironing out any bugs in the system. Some of the most effective methods for instructors to utilize technology to aid in the creation of excellent learning environments for their
pupils are as follows: Video conferencing is a method of communicating through video. Many online instructors will continue to provide lectures or instructional time to their students. There are a variety of video conferencing services available that enable instructors to interact with their
students at set times throughout the day. For educators, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts are all popular choices. These video conferencing systems enable online professors to schedule precise times for their students to connect in to attend a lecture or have class, allowing those who teach online to help explain topics in a form that students can see. They may also allow students to join together for projects or teamwork, as well as meet one-on-one with their teacher.
The fourth strategy is system for classroom management. Educators who teach online courses or classrooms and communicate with students digitally might benefit from an online control center to help them stay organized. Teachers may use this system to communicate class notes, schedule classes, discuss online courses and lessons, post assignments, and have students turn in their work. Teachers often utilize Google Classroom, Canvas, and Blackboard as classroom management systems. These systems allow teachers to set up their classrooms in an orderly manner, ensuring that pupils understand what they need to accomplish and when they need to do it. This method also allows students to engage debates, communicate with their teachers, and more.
