Shequile Jones Master of Social Work, Walden University Essential Skills for SWP-Fall 2023 Dr. Kelly Collins-Colosi November 5, 2023
As I reflect on Week’s 8 role play assignment, participating in the activity was an experience that was a bit challenging for me. I felt uneasy recording myself and speaking on camera. Nevertheless, I found the activity to be very beneficial as it allowed me to evaluate my interview skills. It was interesting to see how I presented myself, and I was able to identify areas where I could improve. I appreciated the opportunity to engage in this activity as it helped me to build my confidence and gain valuable insights into my performance. I learned the importance of active listening and asking open-ended questions to encourage clients to share more information. Practicing interviewing skills during the course provided an opportunity to assess my level of competency. During the roleplay, I took the initiative to establish clear and concise ground rules that were mutually agreed upon by my client and me. These ground rules were aimed at ensuring that the roleplay proceeded safely and inclusively. In addition to this, I shared the agency's confidentiality report with my client to set the standard for maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of any information shared during the roleplay. This was important in creating a comfortable environment where my client could share their thoughts and feelings without any fear of judgment or breach of confidentiality. I aimed to create a professional and ethical roleplay environment where my client felt safe, supported, and respected. During the role-play, I empathized with the client by actively listening and showing understanding of her feelings and concerns. I used open-ended questions to encourage her to express herself and paraphrased issues to ensure that I had a clear understanding of what she was going through. By doing so, I was able to establish a deeper connection with the client and gain her trust and confidence. This allowed me to provide more effective support and guidance and ultimately helped her to feel more empowered to address her challenges. I noticed a sudden shift in Sara’s body language. She
appeared agitated. I also noticed a change in Sara's facial expressions, she started making nervous hand movements and got defensive. She shared that she did not have faith in the program's ability to work for her. To regain her trust, I disclosed my credentials and level of competency, assuring her that I would do my best to achieve the desired outcomes . The colleague I selected for the role play video is Ellen. She handled the situation calmly and non-confrontationally with the minor. I was impressed by the way she engaged with the client. She didn't waste any time and immediately asked open-ended questions to understand the client's needs and expectations. This approach created a friendly and welcoming environment, which helped the client open up and share more about his situation. What impressed me the most was her proactive approach to the conversation. Rather than starting with a list of services, she asked the client, "What can I do to support you?" This not only demonstrated her client-centered approach but also allowed the client to take control of the conversation. She listened attentively to the client's responses and asked clarifying questions to ensure she fully understood his needs. The client felt heard and valued, which helped establish trust and build a positive rapport. Overall, her approach effectively made the client feel involved in the decision-making process. By empowering him to control his plan, she helped him feel more confident and motivated to take action towards his goals. Additionally, I also like the phrase you used "trusted adult". This showed that you value his relationships and made sure to communicate in a language that he understands. During Ellen's interviews, she could benefit from making a little more eye contact with her client. Eye contact is an important aspect of communication and maintaining it can help convey confidence and trustworthiness. By looking at the interviewee directly, Ellen can show that she is actively engaged in the conversation and interested in what they have to say. This can
