Happy Doc Student Step: 7
In step 7 "Connect The Dots", the quote that I resonated the most with was the first line
of the paragraph, "When you graduate, you will do so as an expert in your area of research". It is
imperative that you gather enough knowledge to take on independent research throughout the
program because it will be required in order to complete the dissertation before graduating. Also,
with the amount of research that we are being exposed to we will master the research process
therefore, we can utilize it as needed in our future when necessary.
In the section "There is no Substitute for Time When it Comes to Being an Expert", the
quote that resonated the most with me is "Becoming an Expert takes Time". I agree with my
previous quote because it will take a significant amount of time to master the needed skills and
understanding to know how literature and research works therefore, understanding and mastering
research is a process. It is a skill that must be learned over a period of time and it may not always
come easy to some.
"Generate possible Ideas", is a quote that is included in this chapter and it talks about how
setting a timer can allow you to generate ideas. It is imperative to write down questions in order
to create themes. Ideas can morph into actual research topics that can be used in research study
study. The five steps according to the chapter to be successful in this program is come up with a
general topic area, understand how to articulate a viable doctoral-level research project,
practice
note taking that will help you become the expert, learn what alignment is and how to get it, and
understand what is expected at your oral defense and how to prepare for it.
"Your research needs to fit into your field; you will know what fits only after you read
many, many, many articles". I chose this quote because going through this course you will
recognize phrases such as, "Future Research Should" or "Logical Next Step Includes". Doing so
will help me figure out the potential area of research. Also, action item #31 is an action step that
3
resonates with me because it says "Practice taking notes on at least three articles in your archive
or expand your archive by finding new ones.
According to action item #31 Starting with prop questions is vital therefore, questions need
to be altered based on the person's needs. This section talks about alignment and how it can put a
thorn in your side. Alignment is when a person is able to tell a coherent story from the beginning
to the end, and if a person is not able to do so then they will be stopped until you have it. This is
something that can cause you not to succeed in this program.
My chosen resource is a video that is called "PHD is Easy ''. It is a video that helps you to
be able to understand the requirements to be successful in the program. Also, the author talks
about the steps that need to be taken to ensure that you stay on a great path for completion. This
video breaks down the two phases that we must go through. This is something that will help to
motivate me throughout my journey, because it reminds me of the importance of things.
If I had to describe a word that supports my feelings I would say optimistic. I am excited
yet, hopeful that I will complete the things that will require me to be successful in this program.
Originally, I thought earning my PHD would be hard to do but taking on some of these steps and
action items will prepare me from the beginning until the end of this program.
