Hello! My name is Dawn, and I am the mom of five children and four rescued pit-bull pups. My oldest daughter, Emily, is 31, and has an eight-year-old son which also makes me a grandma! My oldest son, Cameren, is 29, was active military in the U.S. Army, honorably discharged and was married last year to an amazing young woman who I am blessed to call my daughter in law. They live in the state of Washington where he was stationed at Fort Lewis McCord. My middle son, Mitchell, is a world traveler (he is currently in Europe doing photography) and lives with his older brother and sister in law in Washington where he attends school as a Business Finance major. My youngest two kids are a 15-year- old daughter, MacKenna, who is already planning to attend law school and my 11- year-old son, Parker, who loves football, baseball and everything sports. Needless to say I am a busy mama. I also mentioned that we rescue pit-bull pups. This is something our family has been doing for the past 17 years. The kids have learned training techniques and are also very involved in these rescues. Some cases are hard, but we do what we can to provide a safe loving home to those we can help, then seek forever homes for those who need them. Our current pups are two 7-year old’s Loki & Meg (both from the same litter. She was thrown down basement stairs and he was being starved and beaten. Their mother was shot and killed. They came to us a year apart and have adjusted very well. Next is Mia, who is a 3-year-old Pit-Beagle! She is full grown at 34 pounds and is my baby. Full of love and energy, she is a perfect addition to our home. Our most recent rescue is an 8-year-old Blue Nose Pit. We have been working with her for just over a year, and she has been a challenge. We’ve also had trainers working with her, and she has finally settled in and accepted that she isn’t the one in charge of the pack. Throughout these experiences, I hope to teach my kids love, acceptance, patience and the value of consistency. I never thought I could succeed in college. I was a single mom most of my young adult life. I just thought I’d missed that boat so to speak. I went back to school in 2013 and graduated with my Associates degree in Criminal Justice in 2015. After that, I worked as a full time Corrections Officer at our county correctional facility for four years. The shifts were hard on my kids, so I returned to school in June of 2018. I graduated from SNHU with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice in November of 2021, my concentration was Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. That was a huge accomplishment for me as I am the first one in my family to graduate from college. I didn’t want to lose momentum so I enrolled in graduate school at Michigan State University in January of 2022. I was accepted into the Law Enforcement Intelligence and Analysis program there and was excited to get started. This past summer, I took an internship class that really changed my focus. I have always been very law enforcement focus, and never considered the treatment side of criminal justice, but through this class, I learned things that I never understood
before. I asked a lot of questions and got to know the DATSS (Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist Supervisor) here at the prison. I spent a lot of time with her and with her staff over the summer and it opened my eyes to a side of the criminal justice system I had never considered before. By the end of the summer, I realized that I wanted to explore using my education and experience to help make positive differences in the lives of those who struggle with addiction….which brings me to the reason I am back at SNHU in the Forensic Psychology program. I am excited to see how this program will equip me to be a better criminal justice professional and how it will give me the tools to make a positive impact in the lives of others. (…and if I’m going to be truthful, the prospect of being a Criminal Profiler someday also has my interest.) Either way, I’m ready to jump in and see where this takes me. With that said, starting with Statistics terrifies me. Math has never been a strong point for me, so I hope to be able to grasp this material and do well in this class. I have found that math can be enjoyable, with the right teacher. Over the years I have learned that difficult things are easier when they are explained in ways that many can understand (especially those like me who quite honestly struggle with math.) After reading the prompt below, I am encouraged by the way Dr. Ortiz has explained the first discussion question and look forward to learning from you all throughout this term. It feels good to be back at Southern New Hampshire University! I look forward to getting to know and learn alongside all of you this term! ________________________________________________________________________________ Then address the prompt below. For this discussion, create an initial post that answers all of the following questions. Make sure to review the module resources first. Create a social science research question that you would like to learn more about. Note that everyone should create a unique question. An example might be, "Does alcohol abuse increase the rate of domestic violence?" Write down your question here. What is the population of interest for your specific question and why? What type of sampling method (name the method and define it) would you use to collect data to answer your question, and why? Describe a study that you might perform to answer your question. Include whether your study is experimental or observational, and why.
