2 EFFECTIVE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMUNICATIONS Effective Human Relations Communications Style Self-Assessment Everyone has their own natural communication style that they use without even knowing it. The Effective Human Relations Communications Style Self-Assessment was created to help individuals learn their specific communication style. The Self-Assessment also identify ways to build self-esteem while communicating with others. Once you learn your communication style and build that self-esteem then you must learn how to flexibly adapt to and recognize the style of the person or audience you are trying to effectively communicate with. This will help you successfully relate and communicate with one another. When you take the assessment, you need to be completely open and honest without holding back any feelings or false perceptions about one’s self. This will guarantee that an accurate assessment will be given. Before taking this assessment or course, I wasn’t too familiar with all of the communication styles so I was a little unsure of what to expect. However, once I started the assessment I tried to select an answer from each group which I thought best fit what I would do. Some of the groups were pretty challenging since I didn’t think that either answer fitted my way of thinking, so I tried to put myself in situations to see which one I would choose so that helped a lot. After taking the assessment and adding up my scores, I learned that I have the Style 2: HOW (Process) Communication Style. The assessment states that people with this style type focuses on facts, proof, and planning and is logical, patient, and unemotional. I definitely agree with this assessment because I do tend to make decisions based on the facts and proof which are presented to me or about a situation, I am patient, and I really have to work on showing my emotions more. As a result of taking this assessment, I plan on knowing more about how I communicate as well as the characteristic of the other communication styles and how they communicate. With
3 EFFECTIVE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMUNICATIONS that information, I truly believe that the miscommunications that I may have going forward will be easier to fix or understand. I can use the information from my assessment to improve my human relations communication style by showing my emotions more when it comes to certain situations. Oftentimes when I communicate, I am direct and straight to the point and now I know that some people don’t communicate that way. I will try to start a rapport first with others, as a way to ease into the conversation, before diving into the conversation. Adapting more to the other person’s communication style will definitely be beneficial to me in order to effectively communicate with others. Effective human relations communications involve not only communicating but actively listening to others. Once you engage in a conversation and listen to what the other person is saying and how they are saying it, you should get an idea of what their communication style is and try to adapt to it. Adapting does not mean that you’re forgetting your own communication style but means that you are trying to learn the other person’s communication style in order to have an effective conversation with them. No matter if you are in a personal, work, or team building environment, knowing other’s communication style is imperative and it also reduces miscommunication.
