Question: The relationship between collaboration and innovation underpins the structure and use of the Double Diamond. Using the Kolb experiential learning cycle:
1.
Self-reflection on innovation skills
Throughout the journey of this course, my key goal was to grow my skills in innovation and creativity, and to reshape what they meant. Starting COMM1120 I thought of creativity as the transitional way of being artistic and to be an innate characteristic and I did not identify myself to fit this understanding of creativity. In terms of the double diamond model, I recognised ideating solutions as my weakness in the innovation process, specifically in the divergent solution phase. However, after 10 long weeks of engaging with my group I came to realise I had redefined my understanding of creativity and gained appreciation of radical and seemingly impractical ideas in the innovation process. .
2.
Provide a reflective observation on that experience
The mural board activities that our team collaborated every week helped conceptualise solutions and I came to appreciate the different perspectives of my teammates and to integrate them to formulate solutions. Additionally, the urgency of time forced me to step out of my comfort zone and take charge in roles such as interviewing stakeholders which at first was a challenge and afraid I might not find a solution to our prototype. Rather than feeling stressed over the prototype, I had a conversation with a potential stakeholder and had a natural conversation which led to a smoother approach, and they were able to give feedback that assisted my group to further enhance our prototype and solutions. This experience led me to understand that creativity extends beyond artistic ability: it is open to anyone capable of generating ideas.
My role as team player was the organiser which meant to find times where all team members were available for a meeting so that the processes were functional. However, we found that rather than a
structured approach our team worked better in a more organic manner, with team members collaboratively sharing ideas and proposing solutions on the mural board. This approach was found to be a freer and more open platform for brainstorming. The key in management was the ability to be flexible, we found that working on the project the ability to change to the project needs and demands assisted the progress to be smoother. However, to cope with the workload being weighed on somebody else excessively we had a plan to counteract that which was if a team member was missing more than two internal group meetings or not completing assigned tasks to the deadline, the group would get together and address the problem and if necessary, would escalate to the tutors. My collaborative journey throughout this course and project has shown me that the unique perspectives of
a group encourage empathy and to adapt to find solutions. We had many conversations that related outside of our projects which led to a better understanding of each other and made us feel more than “students completing a uni assignment” despite not meeting them and communicating through zoom we had formed a connection. This helped us to work more collaboratively and aided us to further participate and exhibit their creativity rather than being obliged too. 3.
What you learned from the experience and how you learnt it
In the context of my own personal goals, I hope to take on collaboration and efficiency skills further in my career. I value the ability to be flexible as this can be applied in future projects, encouraging members to remain adaptable and open to change. It can be beneficial when working on projects with evolving requirements or in situations where the team's composition may change. With the assisted feedback from
the tutors from assessment 2A I aim to improve my communication skills in written, verbal and presentation delivery, as this can drastically improve the message you are delivering to your audience. It is essential to build rapport with your audience and this can be achieved with good eye contact, pitching ideas that reach their wants and needs and most importantly keeping the delivery engaging. The importance of effective communications is crucial especially when working with stakeholders, it is important to ask the correct questions and be able to have a smooth conversation while keeping it professional. Throughout my data science degree, I realised I had learnt many of the foundations of mathematics, statistics, and economics but I soon came to realise how would I use these skills in my professional career? How would I communicate the ideas I had; I only knew how to solve mathematical problems? By doing research on COMM1120 I thought this unit would deepen my collaborative and communication skills. This course taught me how to network with others in the corporate world, and I would like to continue to familiarise myself with brainstorming and generating ideas to practise this in the real corporate world. This unit helped me understand how I can take my other mundane units that I have studied in data science and present them in an engaging manner keeping the audience equipped. Furthermore, I intend to submit applications for diverse subcommittee positions aligned with my interests.
This approach aims to expand my perspective through networking with others and participating in leadership opportunities.
